Hi HelzBelz
I would need to look at his daytime routine to see how long he is up and also whether you are feeding solids before milk. Also I am not sure what you mean by decent naps. If he is sleeping during the day say for 45 minutes to an hour then I would resettle at naptime and then this would help during the night time. Also how does he go into his cot for naps and bedtime Ð awake, do you use any props like dummies or white noise or rocking.
I would tend to leave him to try and resettle during the night and then go in and pat and ssh him off to sleep. If after 20 minutes of trying to resettle then I would feed him but if you can have a set resettling time then eventually he will sleep longer and the night feed will be pushed out closer to breakfast. With regard to the 20 minutes I have suggested you can start with 10 and then increase and the breakdown would be to leave him to grizzle/cry say for 5 and then pat and ssh for 5 and then increasing the time frame as you feel confident in doing it.
Also what is his first morning feed Ð cereal or breast. IF it is breast then I would suggest changing to solids and then milk.
Hi, I enjoyed your talk, it was really useful. I have a 5 and half week old and the shushing and patting has already been useful. What I would like to ask is my baby sleeps for 6-8hrs throught the night and while I am certainly not complaining, is the ok? She is still putting on weight, and feeding well (she is bottle feed with ebm on demand). Also some of her day naps are up to 4 hrs, usually followed by a longer awake time. Only in the evening she does 60-90min naps, feeds in between then sleeps from 12-8am. Should I be waking her to feed or let her sleep? Is she sleeping too irregularly? Thank you.
HI Dizzi79
Yes, it is certainly okay for your baby to sleep that long at night - the guideline here is as long as she is happy and contented and putting on weight and isn't sleeping from exhaustion then all is good
With regard to nap times in the day I would be looking for more consistency and would be feeding every 3 to 3 1/2 hours during the day and napping from 1 1/2 to 2 hours. At approximately 6 weeks I would think that her up time is approximately 45 minutes to an hour maybe 1 1/4 hours max.
With making her awake time and nap times more consistency this may help with the early evening period.
