Depends where you and the age of your child. Under 3s are slightly easier to find places for. Honestly start looking now and ask how long the waiting lists are. I started looking in the May when I wanted mine to start the following Feb and it was a bit of a struggle (but that was with two kids).
We moved to Chch 6 months ago and I was able to get DS1 a place at daycare straight away - he was 2 1/2 yrs at the time. I went to 3 local daycares and all 3 had places. I was surprised as in Wgtn the waiting lists for good daycares were up to 12 mnths
