Topic: Pregnancy Rash - PUPPS? Posted: 02 March 2009 at 9:28pm |
I am nearly 28 weeks pregnant, with my first kid, and yesterday I noticed a rash on my legs, and then this morning it had spread to my arms and little bit on my stomach. its kinda like small tiny blisters like chicken pox. and they are SO itchy!
I rang the mw and she wasnt concerned and didn't want to see me or check the rash out. she did ask about itchy soles of feet or palms of hands, which i dont, but if i did, she would be concerned, cuz i think its Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) and that sounds like it would be worth worrying about.
I don't think I have ICP, but maybe its PUPPS
Just wondering if anyone else has had a rash, and what you have used to help the itching... and did you get it for your other pregnancy's?
tonight I am going to try Chamomile Tea, rub it on the rash. apparently that will help. I hope it won't be like this til the baby is born!

Could it actually be chicken pox???? Regardless of what people tell you, you can get it more than once. A girl a grew up with had it 3 times in primary school!
I have suffered with dermatitis during this pregnancy that was a little blister like which was crazy itchy.
Me personally would be visiting my GP.

I have PUPPS and its horrible! I know how you feel!!
Pinetarsol is really good just from the local chemist, you can get a gel for the shower but I hate the smell.
Otherwise you can get the Pinetarsol solution, mix it with water in a sealed bag with a few baby liners and wipe where you itch the most.
Also avoid soap it makes it worst.
If it doesn't ease up see you doctor and he/she can prescribe you steroid creams and Antihistamines, the anithistamines dont do much but just help you sleep if you have trouble sleeping - your doctor should go over the risks with you too with taking anithistamines.
Try not to scratch as it makes it worst even though it feels really good
I wished that I didn't because now I have scarring on my legs and stomach - didn't help that I used a nail file because its that bad.
My MW is the same, so I went to the doctors to get treatment.
I hope this helps

I'm pretty sure it's not chickenpox... I have had them before, but also, I don't feel sick.
I might try and get that Pinetarsol on my home from work tonight - why does stuff to help your skin always smell so bad?
And if it's still bad in a few days I suppose I should go see my Dr.
Thanks ladies.

Hi I had a rash in pregnancy and no one seemed to know exactly what it was but seemed like PUPPS. I had it on my breasts, stomach and thighs and it was soooooo itchy!!! I found it so hard to sleep
I used aquaeous cream to wash with and a bath/shower oil by Aveeno, that was the best thing it really relieved the itching plus I used one of their moisturisers as well, I also think they stopped me from getting stretchmarks??? I tried pinetarsol but did not help me much and I got sick of DH complaining about the smell LOL!
I hope it goes away for you soon, mine came and went and then came back briefly after bubs was born.

I had a PUPPS like rash after giving birth, my stomach and thighs were a mess. I would not wish it on anyone, i was scratching my self on anything hard and would make myself bleed. I found calamine lotion was my only relief and had to re-apply every few hours.
I wish you relief in any way or form!

I had PUPPS and it was a nightmare, made worse by Daniel being overdue by 2 weeks, so I had an extra 2 weeks of misery. MY MW just brushed it off, but my GP was great. I had hydrocortisone cream - you can buy it over the counter but they won't sell it if you're pregannt - they will make you go to the doctor. I was applying it lightly 4 times a day and it did help. I also used Calamine round the clock (every 2-3 hours) and that helped too.
Big hugs - it is the most miserable draining thing.

I had it but only on my stomach. Nothing I did would make it go away, it was terrible when I had to go for scans etc cos I looked infectious. I still have a few scars from it, and because I couldn't use creams (made it flare up even worse) my skin got really dry and my stretch marks got really itchy.
So sorry no helpful advice, just like to let you know you're not alone

Thanks for all your comments and thoughts.
I rung my mw again today, and told her I was going to the Doc's. the Dr said it looked like Scabies! I have recently been overseas (UK, Hong Kong & Taiwan). So it's not out of the question, but she said it was too early to tell, cuz I dont have the pattern that Scabies usually has. So she gave me some Calamine lotion. And I'll go see her again on Monday for another look.
I am so hoping its not scabies, dh should have it if i do, cuz it spreads in the bed (gross!), but he's fine atm.
If it is scabies, its a pretty harsh treatment that doesnt appear to be 100% safe for baby.
I'll keep you all updated after next weeks Dr's appointment.

I got some Pinetarsol last night and have had 2 showers with it already, i decided to risk the smell... and boy does it smell.... but my rash is actually going down! So I'm 100% sure its not scabies, silly doctors!
And the itchiness is going down a bit. I also cut my nails right down so I cant itch it!
thanks for the tips girls!

I also had PUPPS mildly while pregnant and then really badly just after DS was born! Like you, the Dr said it looked like scabies, but not the usual pattern etc. I worried myself sick that I was going to pass it on to my newborn! But I went and has skin scrapings done which were negative. It did eventually disappear when DS was about 6 weeks old. Both my Midwife and GP did not even mention PUPPS and didn't seem to know much about it, but from my research, I'm pretty sure thats what it was.
Good Luck!
