Hi ladies, just after some advice from anyone who has been through this...

I had an episiotomy when I gave birth to DS and it all healed up fine. But I'm still experiencing quite a bit of pain and discomfort and sometimes even a little bleeding when BDing 6 months after the fact. I realised it would take a while to be entirely comfortable again, but I didn't think it would be this long. It's almost always no fun for me at all - which is sad :(.

Is this normal? Who should I see about it and is there anything that can even be done?

I feel a bit stupid asking in such a public forum when I'm kinda embarrassed to even talk to my doctor about it, but I thought someone might have had a similar experience and I'm totally over it to be honest!! (And I know DH is too!)

After DS1 I found sex painful too. However, I didn't have an episiotomy, he was born by C-section.
Are you breastfeeding? If you are, this can make sex painful. I went to the dr and she gave me some estrogen cream to insert and this helped a lot.

Don't know if this fits your situation, but it might. If I were you, I'd go to the dr.

Thank god for the anonymity of the internet...LOL!

I had a 3rd degree tear and god know how many stitches. I have only just begun to BD in the last month or so and have no pain, or bleeding. I must admit that things down there dont feel like they did before, but if anything less sensation. I would think that what you describe is not normal and would be getting it checked out.

Just chat to your GP! Honestly it may feel really embarrassing but I assure you - you will feel better once you ask! There's nothing they haven't heard before + it's confident etc.

Sex was quite painful here, I had a tear and a few stitches and had issues with healing too quick in one part before stitches could dissolve and not fast enough and so stitches dissolved too quick if that makes sense?

Sex was painful until about 5-6 months and even now it can be painful at times too - no bleeding, but do get some spotting on occasion and like mizpix - less sensation really.

I also had an episiotomy that took quite a while to heal. I didnt get back into sex until DD was around 7 months. Before then it just hurt way to much.

Id pop back to the doctor just to make sure everything did heal correctly.

I had an episotomy with daniel. It took about a year for it not to hurt but it still hurt with condoms, no matter how much lube we used.

Yeah, you're right lil_nic... I do just need to suck it up and have a chat with my GP! I'm not entirely comfortable with my current one though (just a weird feeling and I feel "brushed-off" all the time, espescially about women's stuff. For example when I said we were starting to TTC, didn't mention anything about folic acid or pre-pregnancy blood testing or any of that) so maybe it's a good time to change GP's also.

Doesn't seem to be too weird to still be having a bit of discomfort though by the sounds of it. But I would definitely like for things to be a little closer to what was normal pre-baby!

I had surgery to remove an anterior cyst caused by a blocked mucus duct on May 31st last year, so its 9months on.
the cut they made to remove it is basically the same as a 3rd degree tear from childbirth that needed surgery to fix.

even now if DP moves the wrong way it hurts. like enough to make me cry. it is a lot better than it used to be. it used to take alot of lube and paitence because my scar tissue is literally a raised lump now, and as they cut out the mucus ducts from it it cant self lubricate

Are you using condoms? (sorry for the forthright question lol, you don't have to answer!) I didn't tear at all after DD's birth but still found sex really painful, till one day we forgot to use a condom (tempting fate I know but luckily didn't get pregnant from it lol) and it didn't hurt! So worked out it was the condoms that hurt. Finally got an IUD at 5months and no more pain. Even when I got the IUD out in June last year and we waited one more month before TTC #2, using condoms was painful 16-17months after giving birth. So weird seeing I didn't have that problem before getting pregnant.
DD 4yrs
DS 2yrs

It's totally normal, but get your doctor to check it out anyway. I had mine checked as part of my smear test, so less embarrassment that way. Apparently the scarring had formed a "ridge" that basically just needed to be stretched and flattened out. Best way is to BD more! Use lots of lube and it will improve. I actually found BDing fairly soon after the birth painless, but as the scars healed and tightened, it became more painful and then I was less inclined, which just made it worse. My doctor said that's really common. Next time around I'm going to make sure we try to BD a bit more often sooner after the birth, just so I don't have the same problem again.
