DS seems to be a long way off walking yet, but boy can he climb!
I feel like I spend all day attempting to anticipate what he will get into next, and cleaning up the chaos he makes on the way.

Would love tips from anyone else who's had a climber.
Was told yesterday not to put hoodys on him, so waont do that again. Anything to help keep me sane and him safe greatly apreciated

Kelly I was going to ask this very question myself!

DS is very tall and is into and on top of everything, couches, chairs, tables.. it's so hard to anticipate where he will get to next. I'll be keeping a close eye on any replies

If he can climb out of his cot then it is time to move him to a bed!
Also keep couches and tables away from windows, you don't want him falling through the glass or climbing out.

Other than that, you need eyes in the back of your head!

Maybe if you are busy and can't keep a close eye on him put him in a play pen with some toys.

No experience, but at plunket classes they said when you lift them down from somewhere high, always turn them round so they learn you come down from things backwards. Otherwise if they ever try to get down forwards the weight of their head will pull them down.

Hes very goodat getting down from things too-hesbeen able to competently and independantly get up and down the 2 steps at each end of our deck for ages now.

He is in a sleeping bag at night, but even in the day hes not attempted to get out of his cot yet.

I find him eating fruit out of the fruit bowl in the middle of the dining room table,...we have a window seat in the lounge which the other day he climbed for the first time and then had one leg out of the window when I came into the room.
If hes not climbing hes into everything, we have to keep the loo, laundry and bathroom doors shut which is a pain cos the door handles are too high for Isla to reach so she has to get us to open the door when she wants to go to the loo etc!
The joys of a pre-toddler boy!He has the cutest and cheekest smile to go with it!

My DD2 could climb long before she could walk, and it was just a matter of time - and a lot of frustration! I found her up on the kitchen table the other day, dialling someone on my cellphone

She's not so bad as she was though, now that she can walk (she is 19mo, and started walking almost a month ago).

watching this thread with interest as I have a feeling that Tom is going to be a climber. already he has figured out how to get onto the coffee table and both the sofas and I caught him trying to climb the railings outside the other day. Unfortanately his big sister thinks its a huge joke and if he can't get onto something she is more than happy to help him

Mine is older, but she is a climber too, terryifying, up and down stairs is awful

Put safety locks on any scary windows

we used safety gates , only had two chairs at out dining room table, tucked behind the table til we needed them, put all the things that interested her down low.
I gave her a cupboard in my kitchen for her stuff - ie anything plastic and just repeated everytime she tried something else - no thats mummies - her is your draw

I gave her other 'naughty' things to do - like putting the cushions on the floor and letting her bounce from the couch onto them

Picked my arguements - like if she emptys a bag of rice I ignore her and just clean it up once she has finished playing in it

I do let her climb - she is learning her boundaries - but I dont let her do anything that could kill her - her latest trick is to climb onto the roof of the car - instant time out and I threaten to take her favorite toy off her
I go in after her time out and tell her why its so bad and dangerous

Before she was old enough to understand I got her a climbing frame with a slide from a toy hire place - I have it here now again for her but she is big so its not so exciting

Move furniture away from windows and anything dangerous. You might be able to put a chair/stool by the bathroom door so that Isla can climb on it to access the door handle - that's what we have. Does he climb to access things or climb for the sake of climbing? My climbers just climbed for fun so I have let them on the coffee table etc rather than hinder them. Now they have very good balance, a lot better than the others who weren't interested in climbing.

He climbs to access things I think,...like to get stuff off the tables, or stands on the kids table to reach up and get the felt pens etc.
Good idea about the stool by the door for Isla, and will look into hiring some climbing frame toy too.

I have put diswashing liquid etc out of reach in the kitchen, and have all the plastic stuff in one cupborard that he loves to get into. The bathroom cupboards cant be locked, so that door now has to be shut. We have a old house- the windows either slide upwards or are hinged on the side and pen like a door- dont think its possible to put saftey locks on them. Aidens bedroom window is level with the bed in there- so cant open that cos he loves it and Im scared he could be up on the bed and out the window. I follow him around everywhere but it would only take a min when Im doing the washing or in the shower or something.

Thanks for your tips everyone
