Topic: Teething and solids... Posted: 01 February 2011 at 12:05pm |
I have a question re solids and teething... DD finally got her first 3 teeth at about 10mo in about 1.5-2 weeks, but since then she's gone off her food... She's barely eaten a thing the past month! Still happy and healthy and appears to be growing but she's gone from eating 3 decent sized meals a day to taking a bite or 2 and being done and some days doesn't even eat a thing!
We do BLW but she'll also be happily spoon fed a similar amount (anywhere from 120g-210g roughly) but since teething she just hasn't been interested at all.
She was sick over the weekend and yesterday was the first time in a month that she actually ate something for all 3 meals! Still not what she was eating but more than a bite or 2!
She is still BF and our days go like this... 6.30am wake up, 8am breakfast, 10/10.30 BF and nap for 2 hours, 12 ish wake up, 12.30 lunch, and about 3ish BF and nap for 2 hours, then dinner at about 6.30 and a BF and bed at about 7.30ish... She still feeds about 2-3 times over night depending. My doc reckons I am feeding her too much BM over night which is why she isn't eating but I don't believe that because she was eating so well until her teeth came and that's the only 'difference!'. She gave me a book on night weaning but I'm not interested as I don't believe it is the problem as her night feeding is strictly comfort and she only sucks for 5 mins, sometimes no let down.
Anyone experienced anything similar?? Advice!
Am currently waiting to hear back from Plunket to get her weighed, otherwise I might take her off to the doctors...
Mil thought she could be diabetic as BIL #3 did the same thing before he was diagnosed (went off his food but increased his water/fluid intake) I haven't noticed DD increasing her fluid intake, although she loves her sippy cup! I haven't noticed increased urination although she always has quite full nappies which I change after her naps of if she's pooed. Mil always swears she can smell ketones (Sp?) on her breath...

I don't have any words of wisdom really...But, if you suspect diabetes, could you ask the GP about that directly?

I would, but every time I mention anything she just brushes me off and I've noticed it with quite a few of the GPs at our clinic. Mil plans to do a finger prick blood sugar test on her next time we head round so we'll see what that says.
Am still waiting on Plunket... I know she was there today at clinic because we walked past and I saw her but perhaps she was busy...

I am no doctor, but talking from experience it could very likely be related to teething, being sick and also just an age thing. DD started off eating tonnes and was very non fussy and then one day it just changed and she would somedays eat hardly anything and drink the same amount as usual maybe a little more water, she was a late teether so we had times of lots of teeth at once and going off her food was sometimes the only symptom.
ETA if its a tummy bug that she has had DD could go for a week or more before really being interested in food again after a tummy bug.
Have you tried offering her different stuff or say maybe a homemade iceblock? It may help with her sore gums and also get her a little interested in eating as such again.
P.S. be warned if you are using an actual finger pricker that diabetics use, they can hurt quite a lot and leave you with a really sore finger, talking from experience so be prepared for lots of tears.

Yes! Infact, I wouldn't use finger....they test new born blood sugars from heel, and use a smaller needle.

I'm not sure what mil planned to use, but will let her know. She figured if it was high or anything that at least then the doctor couldn't brush me off but I had noticed when she had a blood sugar test earlier that they used her heel (but she was 5 weeks old)
She's always had quite a variety and ice blocks are definitely a hit, she did get 3 teeth all at once pretty much and I had a look today and can see her 2nd top tooth under the gum so wonder if it's that...

Maybe get your pertner to take her to the GP. From experience my GP has taken my partner more serious than he has me. He made me feel like a twit when I took my daughter in asking about eczma, the next week my partner took her in and sure enough, I was right. I think men dont go to the GP at the drop of a hat like some females do and they get taken mores seriously unfortunatly

Sounds just like Taylah at that age.
Teething could well be why she isnt eating. With dd id be surprised if i could get one meal in her let alone 3. This went on for months. She has only started eating alot more from 18 months old.
I also wouldnt worry about how many BFs she gets Milk is still important. Who cares what plunket say. And her routine with milk, food etc sounds perfectly normal
But i do think it is pretty normal behavior with teething or upset tummy etc.
If you are really concerned go back to the doctor mummy knows whats best.

About a couple of days after she got better from being sick she started eating again - truck loads after a week though; I suspect that was because I got sick too but worse than her (lost 4kg in about 4 days because couldn't keep anything down) and so she fed less and my supply dropped and she must have got really hungry! She's eating well now and my supply is back where it was, she's feeding less during the day and night now as a result. So I think it may have been just getting used to her teeth, she cut her 4th tooth about 2 weeks ago and went on another 'strike' for about 2 days while it cut the gum.
We have an appointment to go to the doctors next week, had plunket about 2-3 weeks ago now and she's still up in the 97%ile for weight and 85th for height but PN thinks she may have a dairy intolerance (which I had suspected when she was just exclusively BF). Plunket said it looks like my milk was enough for her while she was on her hungry strike though.
