Topic: Lactating?! Posted: 19 July 2011 at 3:21pm |
Hey everyone quick question for ya :) I have a 1 year old DD and my husband and I are trying for #2. The only bump in the road is that I havent had AF in 3 months, so my gynae put me onto Clomid to even things out. Well anyway about 2 weeks ago when I squeezed my nipple a little milk came out. Then that night I woke up in a puddle of it (lol it was all over hubby!) and even now if I squeeze my nipple some comes out! So this happened before the Clomid so it cant be that, why am I lactating!

You aren't utd? Did you BF your daughter? I take it you aren't BFing anymore but I've read and heard it can take anywhere from days to weeks to months for milk to dry up!

Hey I did b/f untill bubs was 4 months old and she weaned herself off lol and so it took a month to dry up. So Ive been drying for 5-6 months. I dont think Im utd. The last at home preg test I took was bfn but it was weird (and Im guttered I didnt take a pic of it!) The neg line was showing and then where the other line should have been it looked like the ink had run but wasnt going horizontal but vertical! who knows what that means! But I had a blood test done this morning for ovarian function and hormones and a hcg test so waiting to hear back.

It can take years for the milk to fully dry up after breastfeeding. Some women can still get some out after a long time having been weaned.
However, it's also a sign of high prolactin levels in some women (and men) that they start lactating. Did your Dr check your prolactin levels? I had high prolactin levels several years ago (caused by a medication I was on) and my periods stopped. Wasn't until we worked out it was the medication I was on, and changed it, that they restarted on their own.
You can also start leaking/producing milk if you are pregnant.

Good question about the prolactin, I cant remember on the form if prolactin was ticked! stupid memory! The only med Im on is Clomid, iron tabs and herbal meds im on are Vitex, sepia and rescue remedy.
God I wish my body would just start working for me and not against me!

Just a note, it's not good to take Vitex and clomid together, they will work against each other, and cancel each other out. I was on Vitex until I started clomid, then I stopped the Vitex, and at the moment am just using clomid.
If prolactin isn't one of the ones checked, it needs to be, especially with the milk discharge.

The reason that vitex and clomid don't work well together is in the way they work individually.
Vitex works by acting on the hypothalamus, which signals the pituitary to increase production of LH while mildly inhibiting FSH release.
Clomid works by acting on the estrogen receptor sites at the hypothalamic level, which causes increased production of LH and FSH.
So the Clomid is increasing your FSH while the Vitex is reducing it, so they counter each other.
In general most people do one or the other. I'm sure, as with anything, there are cases of women who have combined both and had successful outcomes, but most medical professionals (and herbalists) don't advise using both together.

bugger! well I took them both together this month :( all though I did do some research last night and came up with alot of info saying that Vitex takes 1-2 months to start working in the body so Im hoping because Ive only been on it for like 2 1/2 weeks that it would cause any problems! Just wish AF would show up so I know Im at least ovulating!
