Topic: Posterior Tounge Tie Posted: 28 March 2011 at 3:54pm |
Hi there,
My son will be 3 weeks old on sunday and he has already had a snip for a tounge tie. but Lactation consultant has discovered today that he also has a Posterior Tounge Tie (hence why hes not latching and munching my nipples). So hes booked into the Oral Surg 14th aril to get this fixed. so far away!!!
Anyone out there had this? and has it worked with feeding etc?
At the moment i have to use nipple shield as otherwise he munched my nips.
Its been a rough first couple weeks for a first time mummy with having Mastitis in both breasts, over milk supply and now trouble with him latching... its gotta get better right???

Thats right - can only get better!
Got to say, you are doing an awesome job keeping up the breastfeeding. Even though it is really hard at the moment, once you get it sorted out it will be fantastic and totally worth it for you and your son.
If you want/need breastfeeding support, or just someone to talk to about the issues you are having, I would really recommend contacting your local La Leche League. They will probably have some knowledge about situations like yours, with a few tips :)

Hi hon my baby has tongue tie too not sure if it was the same as your's was right at the base of her tongue and wasn't obvious as they didn't even notice it when we got re admitted in hospital when she was 2 weeks old due to losing to much weight she was 9lbs 2oz at birth and went down too just under 7lbs....Anyway they put it down to her being a lazy feeder in hospital (even the LC i saw in there ) so I started expressing and was only managing to get 10 mls out at a time as my milk supply had almost dried up as she hadn't been able to get it... She finally got her tongue tie noticed when she was 5 weeks old and they snipped it at the doctors as this bloke is a specialist in these things..But unfortunately it didn't help for us as even with her tongue tie snipped she has a short tongue which doesn't allow her to feed effectively...So I am still expressing but managed to get my milk supply right up so she doesn't need any formula tops ups any more..
But in the main when the tongue tie is snipped most babies can latch a lot better almost straight away it was just because of other factors that my wee girl can't She is 8 weeks old now

Sweetknights, our stories are very similar! We've been into hospital twice for losing weight and low weight gains (4w tomorrow and still not back at birth weight!) and it wasnt until our latest visit late last week that a lactation specialist (shes been an LC for 30 odd years!) had a good look and diagnosed a grade 4 tongue tie, sounds the same as yours, short tongue (with a small ridge in the middle of the tip, looks like a flat heart top) and tied right back at the base, even my local LC missed it earlier on because he has a small mouth so it wasnt obvious, but when she looked yesterday she agreed there is a tongue tie... midwife coming today to talk about where to go from here, unfortunately the paed we saw at hospital brushed the LC specialist off as a 'BF nazi who knew nothing' so until a doctor agrees with diagnosis, we cant get it sorted to get feeding back on track... meanwhile I'm feeding with shields, and expressing after ALL feeds (and on max dose of domperidone!) to use as topups and keep my supply from running out like it had started to do just before going back into hospital!
Hugs greenstone... maybe someone need to knock our heads together (or our boobs haha) so your supply drops enough, and mine comes back up! I'm guessing posterior tongue tie means the same thing as our 'grade 4' where its tied right back near the base of the tongue?

Babykatnz --- I hope it gets sorted out for you soon and that you manage to get the breast feeding established as its a PITA having to express all the time I am also on the domperidone although I am starting to wean of it now my milk supply is back up its just a shame I can get her to feed of the breast effectively even with loads of help from the new Lc who found her tongue tie... But the expressing and feeding her that way is going well for me so can't complain to much just takes double the time to feed as I need to express after ready for her next feed xxxx

he had a grade 5 tounge tie which was snipped last week. But there was another hidden behind this one which needs to be done by a oral surgeon. Luckly someone cancelled there appt and we can get him in this friday. THEN hopefully he can latch better and not munch my nipple. he cant open his bottom lip out enough at the moment.
Ive been on a nipple sheild for ages!!! Hate it

Good luck for Friday GS! I have just seen my midwife who is organising with local LC service to have D referred to a specialist at starship as he'll need to go under a GA and have laser treatment on his apparently the cdoctor who will do it only does Grade 3+, he wont do 1 and 2 as its simple enough for a GP to do.
and omg yes!! The constant pumping is doing my head in! We have to feed, top-up then express for next feeds topup, which takes about 1 1/2 hours to complete, then I get an hour or 2's grace then we hit repeat... and this has to be done 8 times over a 24 hour period I'm screwed if he goes through a cluster feed period as I have no time to express, and he gets stroppy about milk not flowing as fast, so we have to pull out the formula He wont/cant latch without shields anymor (its almost as if the bigger his mouth gets, the harder it is for him to latch??) so I'm hoping they get this sorted really fast! Already on shields fulltime, not worried about using them though, its only an extra few seconds to pop it on before latching him on, but the pumping and topping up means I have to time going anywhere with military precision... we all know how well THAT works with little babies!

Thanks, Im hoping that after this is done we can start weaning off the shield and getting him to latch on the breast. he can latch at the top but munch's on my bottom of the nipple so I get lipstick nipples.
I hate the sheilds but as long as hes gaining weight thats a good thing really.
Hope yours works out for you Babykatnz. Im not sure what procedure they are doing to him on friday. hes had the front snip at the hospital but this one is where they cut along the base of the tounge or something, sounds horrible Ill prob cry.

Oh tongue ties suck, my Caden has one too but I dont think his is too bad as he still has good movement and can poke it out a decent way, Ive had it checked quite a few times since it was picked up at 4 months old.
We had major feeding issues as he couldn't milk the breast well, but no one ever told me he was tongue tied until my new plunket nurse mentioned it at his 4 month check and by then he was fully formula fed, so I took him to the dr and sure enough he had one.
We didn't get it snipped as he was older and the Dr said to just see how he is when he starts talking and whether it effects his speech, which at nearly 3 I think it has
Anyways, I hope all goes well for your wee guy and that after this one is snipped he feeds much better! Good Luck!

Hes feeding well on the shield. He got weighed today and is now 7pounds 2oz. Was just under 6 when he was born so hes def getting food. Just cant latch without munching the nips! so hopefully this will come right after friday. Im guessing hes going to be a grumpy bubba after having that done... poor wee thing :(
Not sure what they do in this procedure.
