Hi,

This is weird and i'm not complaining in anyway, but this last week, DS2 has got a lot better at self settling, I pop him down awake normally with a dummy to get him all sleepy, he then spits it out and goes to sleep at some point, sometimes he grizzles a bit, not actually crying but grizzles for a few mins then it goes quiet, I have just assumed he is asleep but for some reason yesterday I went back in to check and he is just lying there eyes wide open and when he saw me - huge grin, so I said its sleep time, bounced the bassinet and his eyes went all droopy.

Went downstairs carried on it was all quiet for ages, so left it about 1.5 hours which would have been a good sleep, still quiet, popped up wide awake, not unhappy but wide awake.

Again this morning, popped him in bed at 8, 2 or 3 mins grizzling then quiet, looked round - wide awake, left it, he then did fall asleep as I checked, now I can hear him wriggling around again after about 45 mins in bed.

I have always just assumed if they are in bed and its quiet they are asleep!!

Anyway i feel weird leaving him bed knowing he is awake, but he's not slept enough and will be tired, so do I just leave him as he is not crying, get him up after what would be a decent nap and carry on????????????

This has only been in last few days, normally he sleeps 45 mins wakes up crying, but now he seems to just be awake in bed a lot, is rest as good as sleep?

When I get him up he manages an hour or just over an hour before he really gets upset and is tired but that might be partly as he doesn't sleep the whole time he is in bed.

Hello, I had a baby who was doing this a lot as well. I asked a number of the plunket nurses about it and they all said not to worry as as long as they weren't crying it counted as resting. I did find he seemed to get a bit more overtired later but has turned out to be a very good sleeper so I am sure you have nothing to be concerned about.

:-)

Same here our little man does it too, he also sometimes has a big chat to himself for bout 15 mins to half an hour or so, then he normally doses off, if i go in and check on him when hes awake he grins at me too. I just leave him to rest and go to sleep on his own time during the day. if hes happy in there and not crying and drifts off to sleep happily by himself i would say not to worry

thanks, glad to hear others do it, I love the fact he is not crying, but he gets tired quickly when up and i know its partly to do with the fact he might have been in bed a couple of hours but only slept maybe 1 of those.

Yup same here. Declan hardly cries and I feel awfully guilty when I check on him and he might be awake but in his bed for a couple of hours. He seems happy enough and when I spoke to Plunket they said he is resting and not to worry.

Cracks me up when I go in there and he spots me and comes out with a huge smile and maybe even a giggle. I just thank my lucky stars he is such a happy, easygoing boy. Generally self settles and sleeps pretty well at night.

Jacob did that HEAPS at that age. I actually made a thread similar to this one - and got the same advice you're getting (and that I'm now giving ); that it's fine, lots of babies do it. I used to just leave him till he fell asleep or started crying (well, I was a bit flexible with the crying, if he hadn't been down long and was just grizzling, I'd leave him).

He doesn't do it now, more's the pity!
