DH & I are in our late 20's and we are now in month 6 of TTC # 1. I've just done a bit of research about increasing fertility and came across an article that says drinking even 1 cup of coffee a day can cut your chance of conception in half. Whats your thoughts and / or experiences on this topic?

I'm not sure of the exact figures, but yes, caffeine does decrease your chances. Now, for most people, this isn't going to make tooo much difference, because their chances are still pretty good. So most people TTC don't bother about cutting out caffeine, or if they do, they just reduce the amount they drink.

On the other hand, if you're struggling to conceive, it can be a halpful thing to do. My Dr at Fertility Associates told us point blank that she expected me to drop caffeine. But it's an individual decision, so up to you really

They say there are lots of things that you can cut out or down on & some times I think you can go over board on it all.

I think you need to take in to account how long you have been trying, if on any BCP before, healthy eating, healthy weight range, age.

I was drinking a lot of coffee when I fell pg with DS1 but stopped as it made me sick & have not had one since. (9yrs)

You could get some tests done at the Dr....even if just for piece of mind.

I've always had 2-4 cups a day (instant normally) and I've had no problems conceiving, so I'm thinking it's a purely individual thing. Each time I've gotten pregnant, I haven't been drinking much alcohol though, not sure if that's a factor for you?
I hope you get your BFP shortly Chrissy

There are so many things that can affect fertility, you'll drive yourself mad at this stage    I think the average remains pretty steady at about 9 months to conceive.

What we were told through F+ was that (memory is a bit hazy sorry!) I think they recommend keeping to/under 130mcg of caffeine in a day and a cup of coffee has like 100mcg or something along those lines. I kept up coffe while doing IVF and things went well, and once pregnant, my little dude demanded a coffee every morning first thing or I spent the entire day throwing up ... nice!

I struggled for years to concieve including a couple of years of fertility treatment. They couldn't explain why it wasn't working. However 2 months after I gave up coffee I conceived. (I only drank 2 cups of instant a day). It was the only thing I was doing differently.

So yes i think for some people it makes all the difference..

My naturopath told me to drop to one cup a day & to make sure it was proper coffee ie plunged not instant. I dropped from around 5 a day to 1. I was pregnant within 2 weeks but he also prescribed me other things as well so possible a combo. Coffee & his tabs were the only thing that we did differently in 16 months.

Like the others have said, I think it probably is a fairly individual factor - just like how some people in general are more caffiene sensitive than others. I know for us, whilst we were TTC and going through fertility treatment coffee was one of my only sanity outlets, I did however keep it to one flatwhite type drink a day (we have a machine at home and the fertility doctors recommended we both cut it down to a single coffee per day). Once we got our BFP I cut caffiene right down, going to a single, and then a decaf, before finally giving up coffee altogether. I had one last night as I had to do a couple of hours driving on the open road at 10pm at night which is definitely normal sleep time for me! It left me feeling soooo wired, I only slept for about 5 hours last night. So caffiene sensitivity can definitely change, too.

I too think it depends on the individual. A lot of the stuff I've read recommends less than 200mgs a day but thats from ALL sources including Coffee, Tea(different types have different amounts and it depends on how strong you drink it as to how much caffiene it has per cup), some Soft Drinks, Chocolate and even some medications (I'm sure there are others but those are the main ones). It's all about balance too if not having a morning coffee is going to stress you out heaps then it's not worth cutting it out because stress is not helpful when TTC either!

There's some great advice here, thanks everyone.
I only drink 1 (maybe 2) cups of instant a day so for now i think i'll just carry on as i am, if 6 months down the tack we still haven't conceived then i'll reconsider my decision then. I just have to breathe and stop stressing, as DH keeps telling me, it will happen i just need to relax and stop putting so much pressure on myself!

Maybe a little late to the party but found this link here and thought it might be useful to people wondering about caffeine content. Seems more for your average American but maybe some stuff is transferable to kiwimeasures?
