Topic: milk supply with expressing Posted: 25 April 2011 at 8:51pm |
For those with slightly older babies doing full bfing with some expressing, did you find your milk tapered off as time went on? I had a prem babie and started off expressing only getting 200-300ml each 3/4 hours. now I am BFing fully apart from the last feed at nite which we bottle and I do 1 express, but I have only been getting 60mls (most 100ml). i have been expressing for 5 months now, but part to full bfing for 4 of those months. Have any of you bfing for 6+mopnths found your express supply has tapered off, bt your milk supply still ample for baby? i am worried i will eventually need to do formula topup for the nite feed (really don't want to BF for that one, is her fussiest feed and she usually takes 160+ ml and i only express of 60ml so don't think she will get enough and then wake in the nite).

Now, I don't express often, but I have definitely heard that pumping output decreases over time. Personally, on the few occasions I have pumped, I didn't get much at all (whereas when I pumped in the weeks after birth, I seemed to get quite a bit). Even though I can't pump much, my supply is fine, and baby is definitely well-fed! A baby is much more efficient than a pump.
So I would say don't judge your supply solely on your pumping output, and try not to worry too much. If you are worried about it, just try and let baby nurse as often as possible to stimulate your supply.
Anyway, here is a really helpful link from Kellymom for you!

Definitely -- my pumping supply almost completely disappeared, but I still seem to have plenty when DS feeds directly.
It's quite interesting -- I think that as DS has got older, he has also changed the way he feeds (in terms of sucking, IYKWIM), and after using the electric pump for months with no worries, I don't get anything anymore using that, but I can still fill a bottle hand-expressing.

Same here I express a lot less than I used to, DD is still getting plenty she sucks a lot harder than the pump does she's like a hoover stuck to my nipple.
I still have plenty of milk there is always more available when she's finished feeding. I only get 30-50mls when I express now which isn't very often.

Wow that's really interesting and makes me feel quite abit more comfortable. funnily after posting this last nite my electric pump motor died ARGH so i used the manual bits but a new electric motor won't arrive till tomorrow so I may have to try and be brave and do the last nite feed via BF instead of expressed milk in bottle. She is often quite grumpy ont hat feed so am worried... but i guess if i never try i will never know. will have a bottle on standby just in case perhaps!
Thx for the link missshell i will go to that now and have a squizz.
interesting katz that you get some hand expressing bu tnot via electric, what pump did you use? I got an avent and have used a medala before too at the hospital while she was in the NICU. How do you reckon your DS has changed his suck?
I must say E's BFing is a lot better now that in the early days and it is usually quite a pleasure (apart from when she bites.... not looking forward to teeth time).

I got a medala swing CJ, which worked really well for ages, but yeah - just like caliandjack -- DS has a much stronger suck now, and the pump just doesn't seem to be strong enough. But when I hand express, I can really squeeze the milk ducts (sorry if TMI) and milk comes out no problem.
