I made my first pocket on the weekend, the wee weka sml/med pocket. I finally got my hemp insert overlocked today and tried it on Jack. I think that it fits ok for now, should be in it for a while especially if he slims down a bit with walking.
As I don't actually own a pocket (only fitteds) I feel a bit in the dark and want to make sure I get it right. I have made a hemp terry insert 32cm x 40cm, 2 layers.
1. would this be enough for day time with a 'standard' wetter?
2. I have folded in 4 so it ends up 32cm x 10cm as the pocket isn't quite wide enough to fold it 3x. Does this sound ok? There is a little room either side of the insert but this seemed to disappear when Jack wore it
3. do I need microfibre inserts? I thought I saw a thread on this but wasn't sure if I needed them or not
4. I have washed the hemp twice in a 60C wash. Is this enough to remove the water repellant properties? Can I wash them with my nappies now?
I would say getting some microfibre inserts wouldn't be a bad idea. Hemp is quite slow to soak up the wees it sometimes leaks out the side. If you have mf on top of the hemp it should absord the wees and then it slowly goes through to the hemp.
Start using the hemp now, it might not be at its full absorbing potential but it will still absorb a bit so will be fine for day time use. I never wash my inserts first I just use them and once they have been used several times I'll start using them for nights.
