Hey,

I'm 11 weeks and have been sick constantly since about five weeks, finally resulting in a hospital stay and drip put in last week. They've said it is hypermesis and put me on two week's bed rest. Just wondering, does the rest actually help (I'm relucatant to take time off work) and does hypermesis still go away after the first trimester ish?? I read somewhere it can signal a problem with the baby, so am now in panic mode.

Thanks!!

Firstly - don't panic! I may be wrong but I got told that actually hyperemesis can be a sign that things are good with the baby, because it can just be a signal of a rush of lots of hormones.

Rest can actually help (it helped me, a bit) but it seems to vary for person to person what works and what doesn't. Sometimes it goes away after the first trimester, sometimes it lasts the entire pregnancy, sometimes it's somewhere in between (personally I threw up 5+ times a day for weeks 7-32ish, and then about once every couple of days after that, seemingly when I didn't snack often enough).

There are bound to be several threads on here about it... yup sure enough here are some search results, and I've bumped an old thread of Emma's (called "I take back...") as well

I had HG (hyperemisis) with my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies (both boys ) and they turned out just fine. I was told during many hospitilizations that it it a sign of a strong baby ( don't know if it was true or not or if it was the staff just trying to make me feel better lol )

I had to leave work till i was better- which was at about 20-25 weeks- which sucked as ment i no longer was entiled to ppl, but i really had no choice as i was really weak and lost alot of weight and the meds i was put on made me very tired.

Good luck and i hope it goes for u soon.

I just wanted to say- I second and third what has already been said....And sorry to hear you feel so awful.
Im sure baby will be fine, my Ob said to me in the first few weeks when I felt like utter s#*t that the baby is like a parasite- it will be getting all the goodness it needs off you, which is why you suffer so much lol! It made me feel better somehow.

In reference to wanting to stay at work- dont push yourself girl! Listen to your body and rest.... now is the time to do so if ever there was one.
Books DVDs and bed.

Take care, hang in there!

Uurgh I agree with what the others have said...it is baaaad and you can see why some women only have one baby lol.   I was one of the 'lucky' ones and stopped daily vomiting about week 16/17. Even now though I have dry retching moments and feel pretty yuck a fair bit of the time...the 'blooming' second trimester certainly passed me by!  The problem wit ms is that what helps it seems to change every day/week! I found tomato cup of soup helpful, as well as lots of listening to my body and resting/sleeping whenever I could. I know that's easier said than done sometimes. Ask for as much help as you can get from DP and family and friends.

I have also heard its a sign of a good sticky baby however I did also get it when I m/c so perhaps just some of us are designed to not have as smooth pregnancies as others....or maybe it means an easier birth since we've suffered heaps earlier!!

Thanks everyone. The support was much needed when I was feeling low earlier in the week. Anyhow all culminated with DH coming home from work and finding me lying on the floor with a bowl of puke and getting all upset and telling me I simply "couldn't lay there and die". A bit of an over-exaggeration but it did make me realise that I was getting a bit down and needed to do a bit more to help myself. Hopefully feeling a bit better soon!! Thanks again

If your ms is that bad have you considered acupuncture? My MW suggested it to me if mine didn't stop getting worse, it apparently can work wonders. Just another option to try if you are desperate for some relief

I was miserable from week 3 to birth. Had a gigantic healthy baby boy even though I lost 8 kilos. I tried EVERYthing to help with the nausea and found nothing worked perfectly but I did avoid greasy food, had green apples, vegemite on dry toast, small meals regularly, lots of fluids, LOTS OF REST, cups of broth, green vegetables and heaps of TLC from my lovely husband.

Once I thought I had found a cure it seemed to remind me of being sick so worked in reverse and I had to try something else.

Rest does help and is very important but try as hard as you can to get out for a quiet stroll at least once a day (or waddle)
