My DF has managed to get his life dream off the ground of flying for a helicopter company in Murchison. It will mean that we will be moving there in the next month or so. Murchison for those of you who have no idea where it is, is about an hour + 1/2 drive from Nelson city (an hour from where we are now and my extended family live).

We have found a great little house that is about 20mins out of town,- only 40mins from where we are now, it has cheap rent ($130!) has a good vege garden and some land that we can have some animals (if we want).

Im actually looking forward to it, im an only child so am used to entertaining myself, I grew up in the country and love it and I get to have MY OWN vege garden!!!!

However my family is totally against the idea, they are all like 'its to isolated, you wont have anyone to talk to, its to far to travel.....

For those of you that live in the back blocks, what is it REALLY like? Do you get lonely, is it a pain having to travel, or do you really enjoy it? Any feedback is appreciated

I have always lived about 20minutes out of town. All it means is that you have to be a bit more organised. Its not as easy just to pop in to town if you run out of milk etc. How often do you go out at the moment? If you go out a lot then you will notice it, but if not then its not a big deal. And when you think about it 40mins from your family is pretty much nothing compared to those who live in the busier cities. There is always skype and the phone to keep in touch.

I live in QLD in a small village so not exactly isolated but not exactly anything to do here either. My nearest family member is my brother living in Darwin...we didn't know anyone here and it is hard to meet people coz there is nothing happening. BUT...I have a baby and he fills in lots of my time and I have crafts to keep me busy. I think life is what you make of it and if you are not the type of person who needs company all the time then you might enjoy it.
Also, personally I don't think 1.5 hours is a long drive. You get used to the distances as well, the nearest town to us is only population 5000 and it is 1 hour away, we have to travel 3 hours to get to any city.
PS in this day and age there is always the internet to chat to family/friens on...and the phone!!

We live 40 minutes out of town and about 50 minutes from my family... at first it was a real adjustment for me as I'd always lived in town. I did go a little mad at first... However, I am much more use to it now, but I do make at least weekly trips into town to see people and do the shopping. I keep busy with crafts and stuff too, as well as studying part-time. Honestly 40 minutes drive isn't far at all, you get use to it very quickly.
mum to 3 lovely girls :D
