Topic: Swelling! Posted: 22 November 2008 at 3:22pm |
Hi everyone,
I have got swelling in my hands, face and especially ankles/feet. My blood presure has been rising and the lower number was 86 at the last MW appointment and it is usually a lot lower. My pee test is fine and I haven't had a problem with headaches although I have been seeing those spots.
Do you think this is likely to just be a late pregnancy thing?
Thanks!

Ring your mw just in case, *especially* at this stage of your pregnancy.

Hi again, thanks guys. I did ring her yesterday when I noticed it had got quite a bit worse and she said if it got even worse or didn't go down during the night times after lying down that she would check my BP etc on Monday.. If my pee test was fine on Thurs tho does that basically rule out that it could be preeclampsia or can you have it without having abnormal pee? lol.

My pee teats were always clear and at the end of both pg's I had swelling, mainly in my feet and hands, and always after lying down or sitting on the couch with my feet up.
I was hospitalised with Joel 10 days before he was born with way high blood pressure, (4 midwives took it and then they called the OB who said if it didn't come down during the night I was having a cs the next day) my BP was fine 2 days before this and I had to be monitored every 2 days after untill he was born. BP is something they don't mess with.

my SIL has swelling so bad when she was standing up that her toes didnt sit on the floor. it was just really abd fluid retention. make sure your drinking at least 2L of water aday and cut out and tea, coffee and salt as the contribute to fluid retention, green tea is good for flushing it out too. speaking to ur mw is def a good idea and its good she is going to re-check, always better to keep an eye on things

If you are seeing spots then I would be seeing my MW. I was induced due to PE. I was fine ( well, had swelling for 4-5 weeks) prior to theonset of PE and mine basically happened within 2 days adn I was induced the day afetr diagnosis.
I would be def getting my BP and pee checked by your MW before monday!

swelling by itself can be fine- as can high blood pressure. they dont necessarily mean PET. But the spots thing...hmmm that I would mention. Obviously your MW thinks you'll be fine til Monday though. Oh and the pee test thing? It changes day by day. I had mine done,a s well as the blood test for PET a week before Charli-Rose was born on a Friday. That Monday my pee showed traces of protein but the bloods were still clear. The next day it showed I was developing it a bit. By Wednesday I had developed it well and truly and had to rush the induction along. PET can develop really quickly...not to scare you though! You'll be fine :-) and so will bubs. You're technically full term now so IF its bad enough, they can induce you with no probs to bubs.
(Hopefully everything's fine though cuz Charli-Rose wants to meet you next week lol!)

I had swelling but probably not as bad as you by the sounds of it.
I found that a wheaty bag that had been in the freezer for a few hours to go nice and cold, really helped my feet/ankles.
Good luck. Not too long to go now.

I had swelling and BP issues at the end..and it was suspected PE..so you can be getting it ...I ended up doing 24 hour urine (only a tiny trace before that) then being admitted to hospital and woken four hourly to check BP till I had him at 38 weeks...if you were seeing spots I would get checked out ASAP..

Me too, I got the swelling and spots but no headaches. MW just said to drink lots of water and rest with feet up.
Nobody told me the swelling can be worse after birth though!! It went away after about a week, it is still strange to see my skinny ankles lol
Good that you told your MW

Thanks for the replies everyone! And for all the advice and experiences. I feel a lot more informed!
My swelling has stayed fairly stable so I haven't insisted on being checked over the weekend but if the MW is still happy to, I might get her to check my bp again on Mon.
Hehe thanks Amelia I wanna meet her too... I could just quickly go into labour now tho and have my baby ready so she could meet both of us lol.
Chickoin- aw man I didn't know it could hang around after birth!

I really can't be bothered typing out my story again but if you look at the link that Arohanui has put there it has my story in detail of PET. Short story I got it twice and the link has all the details of mine.
Signs of PET: Swelling (more than the normal pregnancy and heat swelling), a higher than normal BP (and you usually have 3 or more readings done with 30 odd minutes apart), blured vision or stars in your eyes, your liquid input is greater than your output (measured with a 24 collection), your urid acid levels are high (with Andrew mine were 3 times the normal level).
If you want any more info feel free to PM and ask any questions.

Swelling can often be a late pg thing but for you it sounds like you're really going to have to watch it this week. I doubt they will let you go until 41+ weeks - which is probably a good thing with all this weather! Keep your feet elevated above your hips as much as possible and keep your fluids up too.
