Topic: Confinement lady Posted: 15 September 2009 at 2:23pm |
Hi ladies. I'm from Malaysia and quite new to NZ. Now I've learned that I'm pregnant. Just wondering whether there is any Chinese confinement lady in Auckland to take care of my 1 month confinement period after birth? If you know of anyone, please let me know. Thank you.

There was an article in the Little Treasures magazine about 6 months ago about this - I will try and dig out my old copy to see if they had the name of anyone.
Congrats on your pregnancy!

Thanks weegee, thanks SimSam. Ya, confinement lady is the thing for Chinese only I think? She will take care of the baby for the first month, and also cook for the mum. During confinement (the 1 month after birth), mother needs special types of food for the body, like chicken cooked with brandy, lots of ginger, etc... so that the body recovers fast. Also things like body wrap to slim down faster (Indonesians are well known for this).
It is said to be extremely important to have proper care and food during this confinement period so that the mother stays healthy. There are a lot of things not to do too, like can't wash the hair with normal water, but with herbal water, etc., so that the 'wind' doesn't get into the head and you won't suffer from headache or rheumatism when you get older. Don't drink while standing... blah blah blah...Well, I just have to believe what the elders say than to regret later in life.

Hi Bev - the article was in the Little Treasures April / May 09, but it doesnt mention anyone by name, it just says that often the ladies (if not family members) are found in asian newspapers or by word of mouth.
There is a Malaysian midwife in Christchurch called Annie Goh, she also teachs at the ChCh polytech, so could be worth trying to get hold of her to ask if she knows anyone in Auckland. I dont know of any Malaysian midwives in Auckland, but am sure that someone will know.
Good Luck in your search.
(if you want me to copy the article and post it to you, just send me a Private Message with you address and I will pop it in the mail to you!)

Thanks Simsam, thanks Bombshell. I'll try to get someone through word-of-mouth then. Ya, my whole family is in Malaysia, I think my mum will come and help me during my confinement. My husband is European, he will not know why we need to do that, but I'm sure he will be supportive. I too, can't stand not able to shower or wash hair. My sis-in-law did shower and wash her hair, just with herbal water, so it's good. :) Now it's still early, I'm due in May next year, so I'll look around slowly.
