Topic: Having twins first time!!!!!! Posted: 27 July 2008 at 6:43pm |
Hey everyone,
Not sure how this all works but was wondering if there were any other mothers to be out there expecting twins that I could talk too.
Hope to hear from some soon

Hi Kelstar,
I had twins first off.... and last off. We are just about to celebrate their first birthday. I had fraternal girls, Ashleigh and Jessica.
Obviously I'm not still preggie, but feel free to fire off any Q's. I had a fairly dificult pregnacy with Pre-eclampsia and my girls were born at 34 weeks, but I seem to be the exception here, most of the twin mums had no probs.
There are a few of us, and I'm sure the rest will pop in once they see this.

hellooooo!
I have 6 month old fraternal twins. The were born at 35 weeks, by c-sect, due to Aoife being small for dates and having reduced blood flow through her placenta. She also had reduced amniotic fluid, so all of the above were monitored closely from 28weeks.
We spent 10 days in NICU before being discharged home.
Up until then my pregnancy was pretty easy with tiredness , or should I say exhaustion, being my main complaint.
I have a twin sister so we had a bit of an idea that it was likely we'd have some ourselves.
Like Travelgirl said, ask any questions you want.
How far along are you? How are things going for you so far?
Have you recovered from the shock yet?

I didn't have twins first time, but I sure felt like a beginner when I had them! Maya was 3 1/2 when I had Mercedes and Sienna, they are identical (monochorionic-diamniotic) twins, it was picked up on a scan at 9 weeks. I had no major pregnancy complications aside from being sick the whole way thru and getting huge and uncomfy. We were induced at 37 weeks which is considered term for twins and I delivered them both vaginally 3 mins apart, proof that it is possible to have a great birth with twins. From memory Anna (Travelgirl) had a VB too.
Like Anna said, happy to answer any questions if I can, and my pregnancy diary is up in the Pregnancy section of the main OHbaby! site.
Gremlins are now 21 mths and were *supposed* to be our last babies, but I started getting clucky again which is just as well coz our big surprise baby #4 arrived 2 1/2 weeks ago.
Best of luck with your pregnancy, twins are hard work but they are also so much fun, I love watching them play!

Yup, I had a VB, was so proud of myself, even tho my girls were 1520g and 1910g, they felt like giants to me.
The good thing about twins first off, is that you know no different. But there is a difference, and it's not till they are a bit older you can get an unclouded view of life with a singleton, and then you will feel reallt proud of your self....... well that's how I feel anyway

I must admit I'm really realising how much harder twins really were now that I only have one baby - when she's asleep, she's asleep and there's no other baby to feed, wind, settle etc. etc. It's so easy!
And in my experience, my 6lb baby was no easier to birth than my 9lb baby so size doesn't matter when it comes to birth, and anyone who can push out two babies is a bloody legend!

Monochorionic - one chorion/placenta, diamniotic - two amniotic sacs. So they shared a placenta but each had their own little bubble. You can also have monochorionic-monoamniotic (identical) twins or dichorionic-diamniotic twins which can be fraternal or identical.

HI
I'm not preggy anymore and the twins weren't my first but as Maya said it sure felt like they were!
Noah & Lola are 8mths now and I have a 2 year old as well.
I had the twins naturally at 35 weeks due to having pre-eclampsia Noah was 6lb and Lola 5lb 5oz and were born in 3 hours so pretty quick.
We spent 10 days in SCBU just to get there feeding sorted

I have Ryan and Katelyn who have just turned 3. They weren't my first pregnancy, i also had Blair he was nearly 3 when they were born. We didn't find out we were having twins until my 20 week scan and it was a huge shock. I had them had 38 weeks 4 days by elective c-section due to a previous c-section and Katelyn was breech. Ryan weighed 6lb 13oz and Katelyn 6lb 7oz. My pregnancy had no complications, just towards the end when i got so big and uncomforable.
They were hard work in the begining, i'm just lucky i have a wonderful husband and my mum and sister helped out heaps too.
Now they are great it's awesome and like so many people tell me i'm very lucky to have twins.
Like the other mums have said feel free to ask anything. :)

Wow this website rocks! I could not believe the amount of support and friendship could be online.
Thank you to everyone who gave me a quick insight into having twins, it has made me feel a lot more comfortable about the situation.
I'm a twin myself, but we lost my twin sister at birth due to doctors negligence so i think this is why I am a little nervous about the whole process. The funny thing is my twins are due on my birthday which sort of freaked me out to begin with but now i think it's pretty special.
I was wondering if anyone has any advice re: sleeping etc do i have two bassinetts and two cots or just stick with two cots? Little confused as our bedroom is not that big and a cot may be too big in there?
I have my first ante natal appointment at the hospital tomorrow when finally i get assigned a midwife and I'm already 16 weeks! Was a little annoyed at the system here in Palmerston as I had some issues re: bleeding and had no one to turn to apart from the A and E for help or advice.
Thanks heaps guys for your kind welcomes
Kelly

Wow that is special!
I don't think there's any right or wrong for how to sleep them. What we did was have a cot in the sitting room and a cot in our bedroom. Our girls are still in the same cot but will be moving to their own cots pretty soon.

Hey, when we came home from Hospital (age 6 weeks) we just put them straight into a cot, but they shared 1 cot for 3 months, then we put them into their own. We had 1 bassinet that we kept in the lounge, and often I had one or both asleep in that during the day. It was a large bassinet though, it was my dad's and he's now 63 so they were pretty roomy back then.

Hiya. Im 36 wks pregnant with twins. Its my second pregnancy but a total surprise to be having twins.
I plan to sleep them in the same cot as soon as we get home from hospital but have got a bassinette as a back-up incase one doesnt settle and disturbs the other.
Ive had a pretty cruisy pregnancy so far for twins. Have now got a pretty big tum but it isnt bothering me too much. Have only just started to have issues with swelling in the past couple of days but its nothing that my mw or specialist is worried about. Im planning on having a VB as both twins are head-down (vertex/vertex) but will have obstetricians and the likes in hospital to care for me while in labour. Ive been told that they can arrive anyday now, so I guess when I get a chance I can keep you posted on progress.

Mine never coslept, we bought two cots and I thought I'd see how they went sharing to start with but when we put them in the same bassinette at Birthcare Mercedes screamed the place down so they went in their own cots from the beginning. They were in their own room too, would never have fitted two cots in our room and bassinettes seemed like a waste of $$$ coz they don't stay in them long. I haven't roomed in with any of my babies tho.

We had two bassinetts and two cots right from the start and Noah & Lola didn't share anything they have always had there own bed I figured since the have shared such a small space for the last 9mths then they deserve some room.
We had them in bassinetts in the lounge and kept them there during the night as well altho the lounge is right next to our room then at 10 wks they went into there own room and into cots.
