Topic: Talk About Pushy! Posted: 15 June 2010 at 2:51pm |
I got a month's trial membership at a "high-profile" nationwide gym. When I went in to redeem it I met with one of their "sales consultants" who showed me around and then tried to sign me up to a contract. Fair enough, that's what they get paid for. I said that I would just like to trial it for the month and see if I liked it then I would decide.
A week later she calls me at home to see how I was enjoying the gym. I told her that my kids had been sick and I hadn't had the chance to go. She calls me a few days later to tee up a time for me to go in and meet with her to discuss options. Two days later she sends me a text asking the same thing.
Then she phones me at home right on dinner time, inconvenient to say the least. Now she's phoned my mobile asking when I want to go in.
Did she not hear me say (twice) that I wanted to use the month's trial before I made a decision about joining.
I am now so annoyed at how pushy she's being that it's really putting me off going in let alone joining!

Haha yeah Les Mills were calling DP once a week for 2 months before they gave up. And he only went in twice to play basketball or something with his friend who is a member
If you tell her in no uncertain terms that you do NOT want to join she might leave you alone. And if you find you do want to join I'm sure they'll still let you sign up!

ange221 I know what you mean, I've had the same thing when I just went to look at a gym - I didn't have a trial period but I just wanted to look around and see if I wanted to join. The lady was lovely but called me about 10 times in about 2 weeks after that. My problem is though that I'm too nice so I would just say 'no thank you, still thinking' which I was.
In the end, I had to be a bit rude and tell her to stop contacting me and that I would call in my own good time if I wanted to join. She didn't call again and I ended up going somewhere else anyway because the equipment was better and thankfully they were lovely!
I hope it works out for you

Lol Les Mills knew I was a trainer for another gym, and still badgered me and a mate to join. It was rather laughable ;)
Still, we took them up on whatever free stuff we could get, nothing wrong with checking out the competition!

Ive had that too! I was a member at another gym and a group of us got a free workout so went in as a one off. I got totally badgered for weeks! I thought she would give up but no and everytime she rang and left a message it would start out "Im not stalking you or anything..."

yeah my first thought was Les Mills... DP had a membership there... it finished at the end of last year and they decided to keep charrging him without renewing his cintract, then when he tried to cancel they told him there would be a cancellation fee (even though he hadnt signed up again and they just decided to) then they asked why he was leaving and he said that he had a son on the way and he wouldnt have time so they tried to get him to transfer it for "mum for the baby weight" and in the end DP had to cancel payments from his bank coz they didnt.

Oh Kahlia that happened to my DP and the gym where my friend works! It isn't the gym that takes the money but another company but the gym refused to cancel payments so he had to close his bank acc.

I used to be a sales consultant for a gym and hated it. I was good at it but i dont like pressuring people into things. but they were strict on how you did your job, they had a set way and that was that
I have strong sales back ground but i really hate asking people for money and thats what it feels like when im in sales. so now im moving towards marketing as i enjoy working out ways to get peoples interests

I would say to her that you'd mentioned to her that you'd like to try the gym first before deciding and would like to be left alone, otherwise you would not be going there. That should do it!

that would 100% put me off going . if i walk into a shop and the staff member askes me if i want help , then thats fine but if they ask me more than say 3times i imediatly walk out . i cant stand pushy people . i work in sales and service but i definatly take my service role far more seriously than my sales role , i really hate asking people for money , especially if its for a service or product they clearly dont need , it goes against my morals , i simply dont do it . if i got hounded like that ange221 i would end up abusing the person lol .

Ange that sounds pretty close to what happened to me when i did a months free trial at Les Mills, however i am hopeless wth answering messages on my cellphone so the calls eventually stopped. I only went in twice as i felt really uncomfortable being asked about it all the time!
Had another bad experience with Contours though when i ended my membership they took my tag, told me i was all good and then someone rings back over a month later to tell me that i owe them money for the last month (my 1 month notice) even though they took my card meaning i couldnt use the gym and told me i was all fine to stop payments now.
so i have given up on gyms and just zumba at home

Just want to add, in alot of these upmarket country wide gyms where the trainers aren't independent, that its not them personally - it's company standard. I HATED that part of the job, I could only be ar$ed working with people who wanted to be there, on their own accord!

Ohhh I rang Contours about pregnancy yoga classes and they took my details to contact me when the next dates were decided. The woman has phoned me back 5 times in 6 days giving me the information and in the most recent message asked me to call her back if I wasn't interested so they would take me off the contact list.... um how about I haven't called you to book in so maybe take a hint!
