Does anyone use it? How do you get it? How easy is it to use? What is the cost? Wondering about it as a way of keeping in touch with friends and family

Here you go. Free to download and use (if you are calling skype to skype)
Yes, we use it and it is great!
Was awesome when we were living far away from our immediate families - they got to see (through webcam) Jude when calling on Skype, which is better than just a normal telephone call as he couldn't actually talk yet. And also it's free! Whereas normal calling would have cost us. Have also heard friends say its awesome for calling home when they go overseas.

Does it just use up your internet "allowance" that you have with your internet provider? If so does it use alot?

I think it uses not much if you are just doing voice but more if you are using video as well. Not sure sorry.

It must not use up too much as we have only used up our allowance once (3GB) and Mum & I Skype each other for at least half an hour probably about twice a week and thats video calling.
Its great as Mum gets to see DD and I think it helps DD 'remember' who Nana is

Skype rocks! All our immediate family live in Ireland.
I was on it for 1h30 yesterday and it used about 300mbs of my bandwidth.

We have it too and it is great. I use it to see my parents at least once a week and the boys love to see their nana and granddad. I don't have many people on mine but the few I do I skype with often.
Also didn't take very long to download it either.

Just want to throw my hat in the ring..
It's awesome! Worth it's weight in gold.
My Dad lives in America, so being able to video chat once a week, especially for Hannah, is fantastic. He visits once a year, and his last two trips out (for Hannah's 1st and 2nd birthdays) she's recognised him immediately and acted as if she sees him everyday.
Definitely worth the web-cam investment, I say!

Yeah Skype is great! The in laws have just recently got hooked up, and hopefully my Dad will be soon - the kids think its great being able to see their grandparents more often, and every time Lauren see's a headset she wants to put it on and talk to someone now lol. We do need to get a better camera though as ours is just a budget one. Skype is so easy to use, and so much cheaper than making a regular call.

We use it for DHs Mum (in UK) and my family and girlfriends overseas too. Lily has tea parties with my sister and she reads her stories. Some of my friends in London have it on their phones so we chat often (no video) but also text chat (like msn). I would recommend getting a decent quality camera though as it makes a huge difference

We have been using skype pretty much every day for the last 4 years, it is great. My ds knows his grandparents even though they live the otherside of the world. It is quite funny though when he tries to show whoever he is talking to on the phone what he is doing cause he is so used to the camera on skype.
We also use it to make calls overseas it costs very little to call a land line. Our phone bill is mostly line rental and broadbrand.

I agree its great! Do invest in a good quality camera tho, you do get what you pay for and the experience won't be anywhere near as cool if the quality is crap!

We Skype here too. We dont have a normal landline (naked ADSL) so thats how we keep in touch with family back home. We could pay to use it for normal phone calls but thats what we use our cell phones for.
We use the free version and I highly recommend it Oh yes, I second using a good camera too.

We I ended up buying a cheap camera and my Bro installed it yesterday for us. I hear what you say about a good quality camera but we only have a few people who we may contact and I want to make sure we use it before I fork out for a better one. Looking forward to using it for the first time

GOing to add another thing in. We are doing renovations at the moment, and last night I was able to take my parents on a tour of what we had done as they can't just pop over and see it.
