Topic: Hormonal Acne - help Posted: 18 August 2011 at 9:44pm |
Hiya, ok so I have suffered from acne - bad enough to make me feel ugly. while I was pregnant with my 3rd child I noticed that my acne cleared up totally. I woke up and didn't have to stress about how many new pimples had arrived overnight... however my baby is now 20months and since I stopped breast feeding, when she was about 13months, my pimples have come back. This makes me think that it is a hormonal issue as I didn't change my skin care range while pregnant. I have read that going on the pill can clear skin. Im not sure if I want to pump my body full of chemicals tho- but my skin is starting to get me down again. Any advice?

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with acne. Hubby has struggled a lot with acne over the years too.
This could be worth a try. This is from Wendyl Nissen's Green Goddess July newsletter:
I get asked a lot about natural remedies for acne as this can be a real problem for some people. One mother I knew spilt some acne treatment onto her red towels and it left bleached spots! Apple cider vinegar is an amazing substance for the skin because it is not only anti-bacterial but also rectifies the pH of the skin. Mix up this paste and let me know if you have any success.
Acne Paste
2 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp honey
1 tsp flour
Mix these ingredients together then apply to spots. Leave on overnight and rinse off in the morning.
You can also make a mixture of 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar to 10 tsp of water to dab on spots.

Hi Helen - what you are describing sounds very much hormone related and due to the changes in Eostrogen levels esp. during pregnancy. Worth a trip to your doctor I think to discuss. Have you also investigated PCOS - a strong symptom of PCOS is adult acne. However yours may simply be hormone related and not necessarily PCOS related. The pill you are talking about is the combined pill Estelle (used to be called Diane). In fact I think the name has changed again recently.

I would stay away from any products you can buy from the supermarket/chemist. Not always the best and can make it worse. I'm a trained Beauty Therapist. Have been for 5 years. I suggest going into your local salon and discussing your options, there are some great ranges out there that aren't crazy expensive and work really well. Just be careful as most Beauty Therapists work on commission to up how much they get paid so are driven to sell product(I know been there and hated it) The best thing to spend your $ on is a moisturiser or serum, it stays on the skin... Cleansers are washed off so just need to be plain, I have known people to use apricot oil to cleanse. I suffered mild-moderate acne as a teen and it has only just started to clear in my 20's. I'm a big fan of aha peels and aha cleansers with a good quality hydrating moisturiser(you get the hydration you need not the oil for dryness).
And a little cheeky trick is to get a consult for the product, samples if you can to make sure you like the product and then see if you can buy it off strawberrynet. Just don't mention your plan is to buy it off there to the person at the salon!

the pill can help, and I used to be on it for my skin. However as soon as I stopped taking it, my skin would be bad again. What helped me was changing my diet - eating lots of fruit, veges etc, drinking lots of water, and I also stopped using any products on my skin except for water (this was REALLY scary to do!!! - but made a huge difference). It took about a year, but now I have beautiful skin.

I tried the pill to help clear it up but got some bad side effects from it and it didn't do a fantastic job of clearing it up so I gave it up
my acne is definitely hormonal too which is so frustrating as most face washes just won't work- didn't matter what I did but for 1 week out of every month my skin would be great around ovulation time, the other 3 sucked!
I read this book at the library about diet helping with hormonal acne. It talked about estrogen being in some food and that being one of the problematic hormones. maybe have a look on the net about that?
I've also started trying proactive and have found, while it's not a miracle worker like the ads make it out to be, it is definitely the thing that has worked best out of the face washes I have tried. Kinda expensive and a bit of work but keep that in mind if it's getting you down again

I so feel your pain. I have always had mild acne, sometimes better sometimes worse, oily skin so definitely seems hormonal. When I was pregnant with DS I had no pimples and my skin was glowing, I never even wore foundation which was huge for me as I had been wearing it since I was about 14! I too was gutted when my skin changed again when I stopped breastfeeding.
One thing that has helped me recently is taking zinc and evening primrose oil. My skin seems less oily and not many breakouts. I am also on probiotics, I don't know whether they help with that or not but they are definitely good for wellbeing.
Zinc in particular is reccomended for hormone balance so I would give that a try, nothing to lose. Like you I don't want to go back on the pill and my skin wasn't that good when I was on it anyway

Hi guys, thanks so much for your responses and taking the time to try and help me out. I currently use Cetaphil cleanser - for oily acne prone skin, I wash 2x a day with that and maybe 2x a week use St Ives scrub. In the morning I use sun sense matt formula tinted sunscreen as the moisturiser and in the evening use Seba Med ph5 oil free moisteriser. I have tried Proactive and it didn't work. I tried a pill before we have #3 baby and I put on 3kgs in 10 days. I had been taking evening primrose oil but recently stopped and haven't noticed a change in skin. I have heard that zinc can help I am think I am low in zinc so may try that. I have chatted to my beauty therapist about my skin and she said it is hormonal and nothing I use on my skin will make any difference. I might try zinc and diet for a month and see how that goes. I would prefer not to go on the pill but i think i would rather be a couple of kgs heavier and have clear skin than a couple of kgs lighter and have manky skin.
How does the pill affect your guys moods? Does it make you have bad mood swings or settle them down? I have suffered with depression in the past and don't won't to be worse for going on the pill although nice skin would make me feel better!
Argh - so don't know what to do. Im scared of making it worse by trying new things, yet im not happy with how it is now.

There are a couple of books around The clear skin perscription by Dr Nicolas Perricone(I think that's right?) and another The good skin diet, can remember the author but she is an australian lady. The both work on the idea of it treating the skin using diet. They both work on the idea of reducing the inflammation of the skin due to the food that you ingest. Mainly sugars/carbs I believe. The clear skin perscription focus is on acne. The good skin diet talks about other skin conditions including acne. I have both and did find it helpful to reduce or remove certain foods from my diet. I have also heard following a gluten-free diet is really beneficial for your skin. I find a mix of both diet and skin care really help. Even if it is hormonal, skin care can help, even if it's just to make you feel good. The decleor aroma matte moisturiser is really nice, I use that as it's not oily or heavy on the skin and a gentle exfoliant like md formulations face and body scrub. Or the joyce blok gentle facial exfoliant is amazing, it can be used two ways, mixed with a little water and buffed onto the skin or my favourite way which a little trick I learned when training is to apply it onto the skin leave it to dry(about 5mins) then gently roll off. The second method is a lot more gentle. It's a great product smells of roses so nice and relaxing. Then a good clay based mask does help too.

Hi there
I went onto Estelle prior to having children for my skin too. It cleared it up so perfectly but it did make me mildly depressed I think. Currently I'm still breastfeeding and my skin is ok-ish. Well, its not terrible yet. I'm sure as soon as I stop it will be back to the nightmare that it was. I probably would go back onto Estelle I think. Having crappy skin really was worse for me than the mood side effects that I got when I was on the medication. Good luck - its a hard call.

I'm thinking of doing something to get rid of my wrinkles. Because of them, I look older for my age, and the company I work for has a new policy. Now, they want all employees to be in the age range of 25-30. And because of my wrinkles, I look 37, when I’m actually 27. Microneedling plastic surgery seems easy if it can be considered as plastic surgery. Have someone tried it? How does it feel? I found this info about micro-needling on https://www.cosmeticsurgeryforyou.com/procedures/microneedling-in-kirkland-seattle-bellevue/
