Topic: What is your nightime bedtime routine? Posted: 01 June 2011 at 2:06pm |
Hello,
DS is 4 months old (approx) and his routine is bath then feed (in the dark pretty much) and then bed awake to self settle to sleep. He loves anticipating what is happening and gets excited about it. And rarely cries before sleep hits.
What is your nighttime bedtime routine?
At what age will we be most likely to change from not having a feed just before bed?
Thanks all

Whenever you want really. Ben had a bf just before bed until I weaned him at 16mths. Jack's bf right before bedtime stopped at about 8mths or so when DH started putting him to bed

Ours is just the same as yours. Mum said that with us kids, the feed before bed was the last one to go when we were weaned - I have no issue giving it to Jacob for a while yet
The cute thing is that if Jacob's particularly tired in an evening, he'll let us know by crawling to the (empty) bath and trying to hop in. Smart little chap.

Jacob, thats so cute!
We're shocking, no wonder DD's all messed up when it comes to sleeping!
dinner bath BF stories bed - usual routine
bath BF sleep - when she's really tired and refuses solids
(Bath can mean bath or shower, DD loves both)
We try to keep it as consistent as possible but DH doesnt believe in keeping it the same very night but that DD should fit in with us somewhat. I must admit I do agree to a point, but while DD is pretty flexible, we have a lot of problems with sleep. She just doesnt like it! Most nights we can get her to self settle, but hardly ever during the day. So bedtime ends up anytime between 6-8pm. After the drama tonight, I'm going to get tough on both of them and set a more rigid routine with slightly earlier timing. Sorry, hijacked the post a bit.

Much the same here too - dinner, bath, bf, bed - starting giving her a little extra playtime before bed - think I'll start adding in a story.
DD hates getting taken out of the bath and being dressed.
That's super cute Jacob.

We are similar.
DD has a little nap between 5pm to 5.45ish (cause she just can't make it that few hours when she wakes from her afternoon sleep)
Then we have a little bottle when she wakes. Then we play (usually no nappy time), then bath (sometimes shower with DH - just to change things once in a while haha), then big bottle and bed by 7.30pm. She self settles and sleeps 11-12 hours. We love our routine. But she know's we don't always do that. For example, we had an engagement party to go to the other night. So we didn't bath her and she had a big sleep until 7pm - then got her up and went to the party. We rarely go out at night. But i think it's good for babies to have a bit of flexibility. My brother is very anti changing the routine for his 2 year old. They are so stuck in their ways that they haven't had a night out by themselves since their son was born. I did not want to be like that.

Hey Lillybetts, I hear you on the flexibility. I was more thinking that DD needs dinner when she needs dinner, not when we are ready to give it to her. We had three months travelling round in a campervan (a small one) with the routine being breakfast when we got up, lunch a bit later and the only vague routine we had was around bedtime. We all survived! It is good to be home and able to have more of a routine, but DD has shown her ability to cope without. I'd like her to be able to come out with us and be comfortable enough to sleep, even if we need to use rocking/feeding to help. Hope you all enjoyed the party!

Wow I would so love to travel around like that twotravelbugs! Did you find it hard with a small baby?
Yeah I agree. I was just meaning, I so didn't want to be like my brother. They are so stuck in their ways with the routine that they don't answer the phone or door when their son is getting bathed or put to bed (yes I'm serious haha). Their world revolves around his bedtime ritual and that scared me haha. My DH and I swore we would be flexible but predictable!

I dont answer the phone during bed or bath times when I am alone, but if there are two of us here...
As for travelling with a baby, it was so easy! Yes it helps that she is essentially a very good baby, and as long as we fed her and gave her chance to sleep (this ended up mainly being when driving or in the front/back pack and she is too nosy to sleep if we just pulled over somewhere new) we didnt have any problems. She wasnt crawling or demanding to stop at every playground / mcdonalds / shoe shop. We had to adjust the way we travel, slow down, not do such long hikes, but we got so much enjoyment from her enjoyment of new, and often very simple things. She could, and still does, only put up with 1-1.5 hours in the buggy or front/backpack, so lots of breaks when walking. I wouldnt normally stop to look at seagulls, but they are apparently very funny! DH and I have travelled a fair bit before DD came along, and we didnt want to stop. That was a bit of a trial trip, but it went so well we'll certainly do more. If anyone wants to know more, feel free to PM me. I'm not sure if my profile includes a link to our blog, I'll go check in a minute.

That sounds like a really nice holiday! I would love to do that with DH and DD one day! Maybe when we're not studying and saving for a house! Where did you shower? And was it cold when you were traveling around?
Sorry I wasn't clear in my rant before haha. My brother and his partner both bath and put him to bed every night. I rung a few weeks back because I had some important news to tell my brother and I got an email a few hours later saying "don't call us while we are putting *** to bed. We don't appreciate it!" Also, I might add, my brother only works 35 hours a week and his partner stays home. So they both see him every day. - So it wasn't like I was disrupting their family time lol!

wow! At least if they are that strict, you know exactly when not to call!! We are flexible with time depending on how DD is each day. When I wrote the first post we missed/ignored her "I'm really tired and over this" cues and that messes up the evening for us all. I do love the whole bath-bed routine, DD loves her bath or shower and its so much fun.
As for showering, we stopped at a camp ground every few nights for a shower, we took a large container for DD to bath in, though she did tend to just hop in the shower with us. The rest of the time we free camped or stayed at DOC sites. We couldnt afford a camp ground every night. We were in the South Island from mid-Jan for 10 weeks, so had warm weather for most of it, but it did get cold towards the end. We ended up buying some winter clothes and a blanket earlier than we planned! We did notice it getting warmer as we got further north, and the last couple of weeks in the North Island were much warmer! We travelled when DD was 3.5 - 6.5 months old.

i just take the ph off the hook if i dont want to be disturbed while feeding/bathing/bedding....
we do bath, then feed then rock to sleep for bed... not sure how much longer we will be able to rock tho, she is getting big! thankfully is DH who rocks her at nite, as we give her bottle then.
