Topic: Right time to fit solids in?? Posted: 09 August 2011 at 2:45pm |
Our wee guy has been on solids for just over a week now and although still getting used to it and just slowly easing our way into them im finding it really hard what time to feed them to him, cos at the moment the wee monkey wont always bf when first up, just straight up refuses till he is ready...sometimes this can be at the end of his awake period, so therefore too tired to stay up longer for solids....and then cos he has not long fed before bed hes not interested until later again...so it continues. Ideally I would like to offer milk before solids till he is older...........maybe I should hold off for a while??

I would be doing once a day at a time that suits you at this stage.
Milk comes before solids until around 8-9 months, how about an hour after a bf, try some food. Maybe try lunchtime rather than dinnertime.
If he doesn't want any one day, don't worry about it too much, just try again tomorrow.
One thing I have learnt, there are 3 things you can't force a baby to do: eat, sleep and toilet train. My life got a lot less stressful once I relaxed and went with the flow.

Thanks Maya22, I like him to have both sides then I know that he has had a full feed, but sometimes this can take up to 2hours the whole time he is up before hes ready to take the next side......never used to be like that, he would be on the boob and take both sides easily..........not that keen to give solids til he has had both sides IYKWIM

Sounds like he's not ready, I started with lunch when introducing solids and simply gave them at a time when we were both relaxed and not distracted.
At this age its all about first tastes and it doesn't matter if he doesn't have anything each day.
With DD I bf her on demand, and give her solids at our normal meal times.

i would tend to agree, if you wanted to just get him used to the solids thing (how to eat and the textures and stuff) just give him 1 teaspoon of it a day and see what he does. we started E on 1 teaspoon of farex once a day and worked up quantity from there to over a tablespoon before we added in another meal. they reckon morning is the best time to start feeding them, but we did afternoon, just whatever works for you when you want to. Farex is a good one cuz you can mix it with BM so he will recognise the flavour and be more likely to try it out.

Some days DS will have 3 meals and others he'll have 1 or 2, it just depends how the day pans out really. His milk is most important so as long as he is feeding well I'm not fussed how much solids he has at the moment.

my girls were late at feeding solids. I got hassled a bit about it from friends/family but they were happy babys.gaining weight.sleeping thru the night etc and plunket/gp okayed it.
dd1 was 10months and dd2 was 8.5/9months.
I only used to bf one side per feed. I did routine feeding some mums arnt into this but I found it was good for us. I read babywise and baby whisperer and adapted to suit us.
Our routine once on solids panned out (within reason/varied slightly each day) as follows
7am bf
7.45/8 solids
9-11 nap
11am bf
11.45/12 solids
1-3nap
3pm bf
4pm solids
5-6.30 cat nap
6.30 bf
7.15/7.30 down for the night.
Anyway just some information from me, take or leave it.
