Topic: 30 min day time naps Posted: 02 September 2011 at 8:46am |
hiya - my boy (4mths) will only sleep 30 min during the day, sometimes as little as 15min.
I know he can sleep he regularly does 7 - 8 hrs over night.
I know the 1 sleep cycle problem is common, but is there anyone out there who's had this problem and fixed it?
I mean I know some babies seem to always sleep the text book times, and some only 30 - 40 mins. So is there a way to turn a 30 min napper into a 2hr sleeper?

Teach them to sleep through the wake. I did it by accident with my boy as I had him in a rocker during the day & when he stirred I started rocking which lulled him back to sleep.

I had the same problem with my girls from 4 months - 45 min cat naps. Hammocks were our saving grace. We kept them in the lounge, babies were tightly swaddled with dummies and their sleeps extended most of the time.

Alex did this. I fixed his using the baby whisperers settling technique. Whatever you choose to do I think you need to be consistant so they figure otu that what your doing means go to sleep. Hers is basically go in and turn them on their side, one hand on the shoulder area, one on the bum tapping saying shh shh shh. Intensity of tapping and shhing matches their grizzling.

If you work out a pattern you can go in about 5-10 mins before he wakes and give him a gentle prod to make him stir but not wake and that should restart the sleep cycle. Other wise just roll with it!

Yeah the old wake to sleep thing - if he wakes at 45min exact (which my boy did - HOW does he know) you can supposedly go in poke them awake then resettle to reset for another 45min. I never bothered trying as i was too afraid he would fully wake up then i'd have a 35min nap instead!! If i want DS to have a long sleep i rock him in the pram, park it up somewhere in the house and every now and then roll it backwards and fowards a couple of times. Lately hes been having 20min naps 2x daily but had a 2hr one in the pram this afternoon.

Ds was a great day sleeper when he was tiny - then he hit that 45 minute phase at about 4months I couldn't say that whatever I did worked, because it didn't seem to at the time! However he seemed to grow out of it, and a month or so later was back to good naps again.

Bowie don't poke until away. Just gentle like even blowing on their face so they kinda squirm/stir but don't wake up!

Not a reflux baby by any chance? Refluxers are well known for 40 min napping, and you just have to deal with it ime.
DS1 did 40 min naps until he was 9 months old, and then he just slept longer. I tried every trick in the book, nothing worked. The best decision I ever made was to just get him up and get on with the day - sitting in a darkened room shusshing and patting and rocking 2-3 times a day was Very Very Bad for my mental health.

I hate to say this but there is nothing you can do about it. I had a cat napper and he only grew out of it by about 9 months. Slept through the night with only 1 feed from 4 months but during the day it was a different story...It drove me nuts and I tried everything from white noise to dark room to absolute quite to sleeping with him to driving in the car to walking for over an hour a day I tapped I rocked and shushed...nothing worked and he was wired that way. Then I gave up I gave him a dummy and let him learn how to fall asleep with that so I didn't have to rock and pat half a million times a day as it will drive you insane. Going with it and accepting that he will grow out of it was kind of liberating and calmed me down (I was very set on establishing a good routine early one and he had a diffent idea of what it should be. It did cause some clashes with his eating routine and becasue of the short sleep awake cycles we could never do the sleep eat play routine but we worked it out and he grew out of it. I kept feeding times constant (for sanity sake) and let him work out his own sleep pattern.
It is exhausting and you can't get naps yourself and you can't get to do anything as it is always only a couple of hours away from the next 30 minute nap and you can't do anything while he naps cause it seems that it is never enough.
Oh and you can ditch the dummy later when things have settled..it only takes a couple of days if you keep at it...worth it if you compare it against the hours spent rocking and shushing.

I had a 45 min (or less) sleeper from about 3 months on until about 7 months. I tried every trick in the book, I started a few threads on here about it hehe I am sure I would have been frustrated at the time if someone said this to me, but I will anyway, nothing worked except rolling with it in the end. If I thought he was tired enough and I had a chance, I would try cuddle/rock/walk in pram to get him back to sleep, but otherwise I just got him up and tired him out as much as possible then put him back to bed 1.5 to 2hrs later.
He started sleeping longer in the day when he started crawling, standing and tiring himself out. He just started it one day and kept going, and I also found it coiincided with eating more solids too. So I think he used to do it because he wasn't tired enough to sleep longer than that and once he was tired enough, he started to sleep longer. He sometimes still does the shorter sleeps and it is usually on days where we haven't done a lot or he has slept really well in the night,
Things that did help somewhat though were teaching him to put his dummy in by himself, putting him on his side and patting his back, and having soft music on in the background. But time was the only thing that solved it for me in the end and once I gave up fighting it and stressing about it and instead just planned my life around it (ie racing around doing as much as possible in my 45 min window) I was less stressed. But I totally understand the frustration I used to find it so hard and exhausting, the days were long!!!!

Also I found trying to shower before he woke up in the morning and eating breakfast/lunch when he was up instead of waiting for him to be asleep helped as I used to spend days not eating anything until 2pm or having a shower then stepping out to a screaming baby etc which just makes the problem feel worse. Do your washing at night etc and go out more so at least you're not trapped in the same environment with a baby who won't sleep

Isaacsmum i did nothign with E, she always napped for 45mins, and now int he past 3 weeks she has suddenly started doing at least 1 2hour nap a day, and sometimes a 1.5 hour nap as well. He will do it when he's ready, just relax and dont worry about what they are "supposed" to do. babies are so different, i still have friends whose babies the same age as E only do 20min naps, and some only do 1 nap a day (E STTN and does 3 at the mo altho i dont expect for too much longer given her age). they get what they need, some just dont need as much sleep for whatever reason!

My 2nd child was a big napper the first few weeks, then a 30min napper from 2months - 5.5months. At least 90% of her naps would be exactly 30mins and then she had the odd really long one to catch up. she did however sleep through the night by 5wks, so even though the days were draining with a 2yr old and catnapper at least I didn't have broken night sleep! I tried everything - in the end I just went with it and stopped stressing as it was quite handy to have her nap in the car / buggy as we were out and about alot anyway. It was actually nicer than my DS who really needed his long naps as a young baby, so I would have to plan my days around his sleep (or he would be grumpy) ... so there were advantages!
She just started having more and more long naps towards 5 months and by 5.5months moved to 2x long naps (and still can cope with very little day sleep at 2). I'm sure he will grow out of it .... all you can do in the mean time is go with it ...
