    Posted: 01 April 2008 at 8:19pm
My baby is now 8 weeks and the last time he was weighed, he was just over 13 pounds.

I am looking at getting some prefolds and covers and just wondering if I should go for medium size, or the small. I don't really want to get small if he is gonna grow out of them quickly.   What do you recon I should get?

What made those of you who have changed go from prefold to pockets? Just curious as the prefolds sound good...and less washing

TIA

My girls were in med covers from 8 weeks and they weighed 6kg each, not sure what that is in pounds.

My only reason for switching to pockets is that they look so much cooler!

Yeah I switched to pockets cos they look cool, are easier to put on, they keep his butt drier, and they're more trim. And I ended up washing most of the covers anyway cos they'd get poop on them, so it wasn't really less washing. I went with prefolds to begin with cos they were cheaper, but now I am loving my pockets!

Harry is just growing out of his small covers now (it's a bit of a squeeze really and I've had a couple of leaks, so I really should let go that he's grown outta them!). He's probably more than 7kg now (11 weeks).

Your boy probably fit the mediums, they'll be pretty big to begin with but I think they'd do the job.

I would go for regular - they only just fit my 10-11kg toddler (nearly hanging onto the corners) and he's a skinny little thing.

I don't use my prefolds much these days, as at Seb's age it's a bit of a pain to get them on him while he's trying to get up and run away at change time, and I have plenty of pockets/fitteds/AIOs now.

Snappied prefolds are so cute! I don't know why, but they're really trim and I just like them for no reason I can explain!

I still use small covers on Sophie. But she is nearly out of them now. I am putting her into pockets once she grows out of her prefolds, and I'll use them to stuff if I need to. She is in pockets now overnight and if we go out, as otherwise she wakes from being wet, or needs changing every 3 hours max. I really like prefolds, but I think they are best on little babies.

Anyssa is just moving into med covers now - she must be tiny compared to your big bubbas!

ETA - she's just under 7kg.

Yeah, Seb wasn't 7kg until 4.5 months Then he hit 10.8kg by 12 months, and started losing a little (down to 10.5) when he started walking... is still between there and 11 now. I feel for you carrying Harry round!!

Wow 4.5 months He's big all over though, tall as well (65cm at 8 weeks), so thankfully things seem to fit him nicely... if anything they're too wide for the length he needs.

And lol yeah he's heavy to carry... a lady at church the other night asked for a cuddle so I handed him over and she was like 'man he's heavy!'...uh yep... hence why spends a lot of time in his pram or on the floor

Sorry for the threadjack JD!

JD, I just worked out 13 pounds and that's 5.9kg! I totally should have worked that out earlier.. Yes I think you should definitely go with mediums. We have small bummis wraps and they go up to 7kg, so they wouldn't fit your boy for too much longer

Yeah I would go mediums. Most babies dont fit smalls for very long. Isla was still in them at 9 months, were fine in waist and thigh still but way too short in the rise. Shes just over 10kg and 17months.

I just bought a gorgeous homemade minky pocket from a lady off TNN... her son has just grown out of them at 8 1/2 months, and it should easily fit my 19 month old And her bub isn't gigantic either... but it is a little embarassing that he's using stuff after a kid half his age outgrows it... I sort of hope people don't think I don't feed him enough

He sounds just gorgeous - lovely and healthy with plenty spare for a rainy day (as my GP likes to put it!)    Both of my kids have been solid - Leo is 19mths and 12.75kg (Grace was 15kg @ 2yrs). But both still fit within the Plunket charts and wouldn't be considered overweight. Like adults, kids just come in all shapes & sizes!

I generally use pockets when we're out as I find them a little easier to wrangle than the prefolds. Plus she poos almost every nappy change so like Arohanui we end up washing the covers almost every time as well.

But they still have their place. For example tomorrow she'll be in them all day while I finish stripping her pocket nappies.

Thanks for the replies....and no worries about the threadjack.
I have decided to go for bambinomio prefolds and covers because I found a shop locally that has both them and the bummis ones and these ones have much better looking leak guard thingies. It made a big difference seeing them IRL rather than on websites. :-)
After much humming and hoeing, I decided to go for small. My boy isn't really a chubby bubby, and I thought I might get another 7-8 weeks out of them. I thought, we are going to have another baby so I can keep them for then, or sell them. They seem to hold their price pretty well.
Thanks again

Also you can use them to stuff pockets if you get pockets later.
