so i was wondering if maybe my lack of motivation and desire to sleep the day away is due to low iron supplies... i have some iron tablets from when i was pregnant with eden and thought i would just take them, but am not sure if i can have too much iron if i did that and wasnt low anyway!

does anyone know?

Yes you can take "too much" Iron. Best to get you iron tested if you think it could be a problem/

I would be inclined to take a vit B supplement like executive B stress by Blackmores or something similar to see if that helps with energy/motivation levels.

I woudn't under estimate how much energy it takes to BF a toddler too, I was surprised how much more energy I had once Caleb weened. Best to get your iron levels checked.

Definitely worth getting a blood test done.
Iron supplements are good, but if your levels have bottomed out you'll probably need a booster injection first.

As HeidisMum said, Vit B12 is great to take, as is a Vit C supp. to go with the iron. Helps to absorb the iron.

Any excess will be urinated out.

You could also take flordix to start with as well, as that helps with iron but tis natural so wont over laod you with iron if you dont need it. Its great stuff.

found this...

Too much iron can be harmful
The body stores iron very efficiently and too much iron can be toxic. Haemochromatosis is a condition characterised by excessive iron stores. Some studies suggest that haemochromatosis increases the risk of heart disease and some cancers, such as colorectal cancer. Treatment includes limiting the amount of iron in the diet and regularly removing blood until iron levels normalise.

You cant get this if you eat lots of meat (unless your sick) but supplementing can cause these issues (floradix wont do it either as its natural as sheza said)
At least if you fork out for a blood test they can check its nothing else at the same time , hope your ok

A blood test doesn't have to cost anything - just phone the nurse and ask for a blood test form.

I'm wondering how your mood is as well? If it's low, a chat to the doctor might be a good idea.

I have low iron and it's a good idea to get onto it. Whenever I have been lazy at taking my tablets, I've ended up coming down with some kind of infection, which you are more prone to with low iron.

Definately don't start taking iron tablets unless you've had a recent blood test to say you are low! My family suffers from hamochromitosis (bugger, how was that spelt again?) and it can show the same symptoms as being low in iron!

Doctor told us its hereditory. Dad has it, 2 of my brothers has it (one seems to have escaped) a couple of uncles have it.. not really sure who else has it, could be more of the whanau but not something we often talk about

Its generally not so much of a worry for females, something to do with the fact we are wired up and periods (bleeding more regularly), DON'T ask me if thats right, thats just what I remember vaguely and could have completely picked that up wrong..
It is easily managed, they just all donate blood more regularly than they would. Happier for them as less iron, happier for the blood people as they get more regular blood!
