Topic: Ovulation Kits Posted: 03 February 2007 at 7:07pm |
Hi guys,
Going hard out next month, cos if we miss this next try we have to put it on hold for a couple of months due to some travel requirements. Don't want to risk being in a remote part of NZ and going into labour early or late.
Anyway, am going to chart but also thinking about using the ovulation testing kits. I'd love some advice, as there are so many on Trade Me and I don't really understand how they work.
How do they work?
Can anyone recommend a good, easy one to use?
How many do you think I will need?
Thanks in advance girls.

this is the sort I got off trademe
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Health-beauty/Health-care/auction-86743967.htm
They work basically like a pregnany test, you dip the test into your sample, if the test line comes up the same or darker than the control line You will ovulate in the next 12 hours (I think it was 12)
If your cycle is regular you should only need a few as you can guess when you are ovulating (ie 28 day cycle will be around day 14). I was very irregular so tended to use a heap of them each month though trying to find the curcial time!
Don't forget to try robitussun as well!

I really wanted to make the effort to post here Laurie as I used OPKs twice.
First time I had results and was able to predict that I would ovulate within the next 48 hours (sorry SB its usually advanced warning of up to 48 hours) so we got busy BDing that month around that time.
The second time I used the OPK I tested 6 days in a row and got negatives every time.......and as you hopefully now know.......I still ovulated and got my BFP this morning.
So just a wise word of warning, OPKs are great but you can still ovulate within a 24 hour period and the OPK won't show up.
I did a similar post just a week ago, so search through the posts and read through what the girls told me. Was a great help.
How do they work? Similar test to pregnancy tests in that a certain amount of hormone will show in your urine at an egg is about to be released.
Can anyone recommend a good, easy one to use? I used QuickPeak ($19.90 at my local chemist). Quite hard to read the results so not exactly recommending it but was relatively cheap compared to the other $50 tests!!!
How many do you think I will need? The pack I bought came with 6. Like SB my periods were all over the place (28-33 days long) so started testing on day 13-19 and that worked for me. They come with instructions so just follow those and there's great info on the web.

Thanks Salifer, and I AM excited to hear about your BFP.
This information is really helpful. Think I'll be buying of TradeMe today.
Just out of curiosity, how many cycles had you been trying for? I'm sure you've told us somewhere before, but I can't quite remember!

Well we started 5 cycles ago but I think I was soooooo stressed and strung out that month it must have delayed my ovulation so our timing around day 14 was TOTALLY off.......
So with better timing, this is the 4th month we tried. I know we are really really lucky to have gotten our BFP so soon, but I have been temping for over 2 years, contemplating TTC for well over 18 months, taking vitamins for over 7 months so was well prepared. I've read every book/internet site and quizzed just about everyone I know on the TIPS and TRICKS of TTC.
I must say this website has been my saviour though. The info I've gathered on here has been the icing on the cake so thanks to all that have shard. And the support is AMAZING, made all the difference on the long wait............hope I can give as much support as I have gained.

Laurie,
I have read a couple of other posts in the past about OPK's and i believe a few people have bought off Worzel1...seems they have a fair few on trademe at the moment.
Best of luck, i'm contemplating using them this month also.

Thanks Mellybelly. I have just purchased a seemingly excessive number from Worzel, and they've listed a basal thermometer for me too. So, I'm gonna be totally obsessed this month it seems!

SB - Yep 12 - 24 hours but do beware with these they CAN present FALSE positives. It is totally possible to have a positive test and not actually ovulate, just means ur body is gearing up but not quite getting there, only EVER confirm it with ur temps and at least 3 days of higher temps.

Jezsika, how far in advance of ovulation does your temperature rise? As in, if I get an increase, when will I actually ovulate?

Your temp rises after ovulation so if u get a positive test go for gold until u see the temp rise and it stays up for at least 3 days

Ok, I am sorry I seem so dumb, but what do you mean by a positive result? Do the ovulation kit tests show a positive when you are ABOUT to ovulate? And then an increase, coupled with staying up for 3 days, indicates that you HAVE ovulated. Is that correct?
Thanks for your help... obviously I don't have the kits yet, but I am finding it all so confusing so far!

Yes a positive on the ovulation tests is a test line that is as dark or darker than the control line this means you may ovulate 12 - 24 hours afterwards. This is only confirmed with a temp rise of at least 0.2 degrees and then the temp staying up there for at least 3 days to confirm it.
It is quite confusing hehe

Laurie, have you checked out this website:
http://www.peeonastick.com/opkfaq.html
I found it really helpful to explain the OPK results.
When I used the OPK last month the distinction between the "test" line and "result" line were so similar it was hard to tell if I was about to ovulate. Had to keep asking DH's opinion so I didn't over analise it!!!
Once you get two lines of similar darkness its time to start BDing!!! At the same time I took my temp every morning and by the sunday morning it had gone up. So we did a BD that morning (just in case) and it was enough to fall pregnant.
I read in a book that if you wait till your temp goes up its often too late, so make sure you start BDing a few days before your temp rises.......it is a good idea to BD the day of your temp rise as well as a day or two after but you dont HAVE TO. I didn't and still fell pregnant so our BDing 5 days & 3 days before ovulation, as well as the day my temp rose was enough to get the BFP.
Hope that helps, but really check out the website, its a brilliant source of info.

Thanks Jezsika and Salifer, you've both been really helpful. I was confused because with the temping, as once you have a temp increase, it's getting pretty late to really get into it (so to speak!). It makes a bit more sense now.
Here's hoping attempt number 9 is THE one!
