Topic: Life after Miscarriage Posted: 20 February 2007 at 12:12pm |
Hi girls,
Just wondering if anyone has any info to share on this. I had a miscarriage on 6 Feb at 7 weeks. The MW I saw said that I should get AF back as per normal. I should’ve got it around 18 Feb but so far no sign of it. Just wondering if anyone out there wants to share any info about when their periods started again after suffering a miscarriage. It should be here now but instead I am having some period like pains but that’s it. But I am guessing it's probably perfectly normal for it to take a little while for things to settle down again???

I got mine back a few months after my miscarriage, so I wouldn't be too worried yet you may find you get it back next month. Sorry to hear about your loss.

When I m/c I bled for 2 weeks and then my next period arrived one week late. That one went for 2 weeks as well and I had the worst-ever cramping with that, so much that I took Panadol on the maximum dose (which I have only otherwise done after caesarean section) and went to the Doctor. A pg test came up negative (but apparently if you test too soon after m/c they can still come up positive) and his advice was that my body was doing a good old clean-out (which is much kinder that way) and that my body may have a break from ovulating/periods similar to after having a baby. All that even though I was only 2 weeks pg!
When my next period was due I had the horrible cramps again but no sign of my period... turned out later that that was when I ovulated and conceived Krystiana but because my cycle was again late (would have been a 6 week "cycle") I tested too early, got two negatives a week apart, and figured I was having the break the doctor talked about. It wasn't for another few weeks when my 3 week old jeans didn't fit around the tummy anymore that I figured it all out! lol
That was ramblier than I was going to do but hopefully the full story was of help.

I got my period back a week after i miscarried i was 7wks, for the next 3 months my periods were all over the place but have settled down now.
Everybodys body reacts differently, your body needs time to heal and recover and nature take its course.
Expect your first period to be pretty horrible but it should go back to normal after that.
Doctors and midwifes recommend that you have one period before trying to get pregnant again, so that your body has time to heal, and so that they can date your pregnany...well thats what my doctor said

Hi Sally Belly,
I'm really sorry to hear of your miscarriage, I hope you are feeling ok. I am sure any of the ladies here would say the same, but feel free to private message me if you would like to talk or vent. Sometimes it’s nice to have people who’ve experienced similar loss to talk to.
I got my AF only two weeks after my MC, and this was out of cycle with when I would normally get it. It then returned to a 30 day cycle straight away, but it has changed considerably. It used to be long and heavy, but now only lasts two days with only light bleeding.
Your midwife was probably trying to reassure you, but as you can see above, AF returning varies from woman to woman. I have friends whose AF didn't return for months, and others who came back just like normal. I would probably allow at least a full month for your body to settle down. The recommendation is also that you have at least one full cycle before trying to conceive again, but again I know people who didn't wait and had healthy pregnancies right off the bat.
It's a stressful and challenging time, and no doubt you're frustrated with your body, but try not to worry too much about AF for the next wee while. She'll be back before you know it! In the meantime, give yourself some pampering and love.
All the best,
Laurie

Hi SallyBelly,
Firstly, i am really sorry about your loss.
I m/c at 9 weeks and had to have a D&C AF arrived after 3 weeks was normal, second was really heavy but have settled down since then. As Laurie and the others have said AF returning is different for everyone.
Hang in there and definitely pamper yourself.

Hi Sallybelly,
Sending you some cyber hugs - sorry to hear about your loss
I started losing our angel baby on 31 Dec '05 and had a d and c on 2 Jan '06. My next AF arrived on 31 Jan '06 which was 3 days longer than a normal 26-day cycle for me.
Depending on how high your hCG (pregnancy) levels have gotten during the pregnancy, it can sometimes take up to a couple of weeks for your levels to get back to <5. Your normal cycle can't resume until this happens so it is possible for it to take longer than a normal cycle for AF to return.
If I can offer you one piece of advice, it's to allow yourself to grieve. I tried to convince myself that it was silly to grieve over a tiny bubble that never became a baby, and that I was being melodramatic but at the end of the day it IS a baby, and it IS your baby - if I had accepted that sooner it might have saved me alot of grief down the track when things finally caught up with me.
As an aside, the AF I had on 31 Jan was the only one I had before conceiving the gremlins, and anxious as I was about miscarrying again, they are here in living color, our gift from our wee star up in the sky.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind girls and advice. I am really sorry to hear of all your losses too. If this whole experience has taught me anything it’s how incredibly common miscarriages really are. It’s “funny” because I never ever considered it as a possibility and I really should of. I always thought instead that we might take some time or have difficulty conceiving but that certainly wasn’t the case.
So I will just wait & see what happens with AF and know that my body is doing its thing & all will be back to normal when it’s ready. Thanks again. It is good to talk about these things. As I was only 7 weeks pregnant, I’d only told my parents, sister & a couple of friends but I am glad some people knew as it might’ve made thing more difficult afterwards.

hey sally belly I had a miscarraige last wed at 7 weeks also, I was told that you are really fertile after you miscarry as well, and I also will be waiting with baited breath for cycles to come back into line, It was such an empty feeling for my I have two other children so I really had to get on with it and did not dwell on it too much, also I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason and if there was something wrong with this bubba it was my bodies natural reaction to terminate it, I hope that does not sound to harsh but it was my way of dealing with it, big hugs

That was the same with me - I already had two children without probs and then to m/c was quite a shock.

Great to read this thread. I went for a scan on Monday as I had started some bleeding in the weekend and found that wee bean hadn't grown past 6 weeks (8 weeks past LMP)- I was supposed to be 11 weeks past LMP at the time. On Tuesday the OB gave me the drugs to start things going, so just waiting really. I am doing OK, I have two kids already and was "surprised" to have a miscarriage too, but obviously it wasn't meant to be and we will try for our third in a few months after we have recovered.
Take Care everyone. Mwah! Mwah!
