Topic: People I dont even know. Posted: 07 July 2007 at 2:07am |
I was out with my friend tonight and we were having dinner at the bar..also her friends were there is well...it got onto me having a baby somehow and this woman (my friend's friend) asked if I wanted a baby sitter.
Right ok first of all I dont even know you...and 2ndly it will probably be a long time before I even leave my baby with a baby sitter. and it would be with someone I actually know (and trust)
I didnt really say much to her somehow her attention was diverted else where which is good.

I didn't leave my bubba with anyone but my mum ( and even then I rang very hour!) until he was 10 months old and then it was only for an hour at a daycare I really trusted.
Friends suggested their kids , I was like I don't want your 10 year old watching my new born!!
So I totally understand, people are mad sometimes!!

My friend was like that when i had just found out i was pregnant, we went to the babycity to have a looksie ans she saw the porter cots and was like "Oh youll need one of these when the baby comes to stay with me" I was like WHAT??? Ummmm I dont think so, Im not letting you look after my baby "just because" no way! That made me so mad, she thinks she has all these rights because shes my best friend! When i finally do have a baby, Im not letting people look after it because thye just want to look after a baby.

oh yes I dont know any mother who lets even friends babysit her new born.
I will want to bond with my baby and certainly wont feel right leaving him or her with anyone else.
and besides I would never "offer" to babysit someone's baby when I had never even met them before.

I'm totally neurotic I think!
No one has babysat for Ella except her grandparents, great grandparents and her aunties and uncles!
Part of it is because family actually want to, and they have first dibs, part of it is cos we know them better and therefore trust them more.
Now that we have two it just doesn't seem fair to inflict both of them on our friends!
As for strangers in bars ! ! !

ok - heres some 'old' hand advise.
I am sure your friends are only saying it cause they think its cool and by all means not to upset you. And honestly I have left my baby with a friend to have a break (and visa versa). Its also good for you and your partner to go out for a coffee just by yourselves. Not that i have done this much as mostly its my mum. This will be one of those things that should be in 'things I said I wouldn't do'. After 3 kids you learn to relax a bit with that sort of thing - although it does help I trust my friends with my kids (not saying you guys don't but it doesn't sound like you do???)
Anyway thats my ttwo cents worth. Too many times I have been to 'proud' and wanting to be wonderwoman (-and I still do try to be that wonderwoman) to take help and afterwards wished I did.
ETA: I don't mean that you should leave your baby with strangers you don't know though.

my stepdaughters mother left her overnight with us when she was 10days old, no phone calls, no nothing, we had her for 24hours, she didnt check we knew how to do her formula correctly or even change a nappie (we had NO real experience before then).
as the person looking after her i was sooooo incredibly worried something would happen to her and will never offer my services to anyone else with a newborn because ok i know i cant break them, but its a major responsibility!
just letting you know obviously some people have no problem leaving their newborns with others

well in my case caitlyn was staying at her dads from 2 weeks old, we werent together and he wanted to bond with his daughter, thats fine i wasnt and never would stand in the way of that, and she was fine, sure i missed her ....for about 5 minutes then i realised all the things i could do while she was gone-like sleep.
If i trusted my friends with her i didnt mind them watching her for an hour or so for me, even if it was just while i slept.
I really think your friends are a) trying to be polite and think offering to babysit is the done thing, and 2) trying to show their excitement for you

Sorry, I didn't read all this but just wanted to say that I often offer to babysit (for free) for people I barely know - friends of friends... I assume that because I am a friend of their friend that they will be able to rely on that friend's character judgement and therefore render me a trustworthy person!
And I never mean babysitting a newborn... but they grow up awfully fast and I remeber by the time Han was about 1, I was dying for a bit of a night out! So anyway, I usually offer with all that in mind. So don't be too put off by people offering - keep your options open You don't have to commit to a week holiday away from your babe just yet!

When I say a "bit of a night out" I don't mean raging til dawn either.... just for a couple of hours to be "me" instead of "a mother"- YKWIM?

Nikki - you put the other side of what i was saying. friends are just trying to be good friends and helpful. You don't have to take them up on their offer.

we dont have any of our family that live in Hamilton. Closest is about 1.5 hours away.
There will come a time when we will have our child stay at either one of their grandparents on their own but probably not for a while..but guess I will wait and see

I recently baby sat a 3yr old, and it was the first time his parents had been out together since he was born!!!
You are lucky to have grandparents close, our folks live in different citys, so baby sitting duty will have to be from friends.
