Topic: Sick Days/Work Posted: 02 July 2007 at 11:44am |
I was just wondering, do pregnant woman get entitled to a certain amount of days for when they are not feeling well and stuff? I know that your employer has to allow for antenatal vistis and scans etc but does that include pregnancy related illness?
Its just that my work dont seem very....understanding when it comes to me feeling like crap, one of my bosses(Male!!) told me(when I went home early one day) that I cant keep doing this until December when I start maternity leave...I didnt think that was very fair when I was feeling awful, I had a wicked headcold plus being pregnant, not a fun combination, he kept telling me to take vitamins but ya sometimes that dont help! Grrr
So I was just wondering what my rights are on that?

I'm sure you're entitled to 10 days extra of unpaid sick leave for pregnancy related illness/matters, but don't quote me on that.
I think a lot of it depends on employer too. Mine were crap...if I showed up to work I was there to work and they didn't appreciate me going home early etc. when I was feeling unwell. It sucks when your employer isn't supportive, but you have to do what feels right for you and bubs.

Yeah, thats how I kinda feel my emplyers are being, if Im at work Im there to work, and it seems like they dont like it when I ask to leave early. It hard cos Im in a reception job and I have to answer the phone and stuff and sometimes I just dont feel like being friendly when Im feeling awful. On Friday at work I got growled at in front of everyone by a lady at my work(the bosses wife) who is usually really nice to me, for not loading the dishwasher! I was SO over it by then and I burst into tears and told my supervisor/boss and she was ok about it but didnt say she was going to talk to the lady about it! Makes me mad it does!

You are allowed 10 days unpaid. You can use that for sick leave or if you have pregnancy related appointments etc

Yeah, that's right. the extra 10 days you get for pregnancy related stuff (midwife appointments etc) are unpaid. You don't get any extra sick days or anything other than those 10 days.
Sukky boss!

I know it sounds awful, an i know how sick you feel, but i did find that if i kept trying to be occupied at work that i 'forgot' how sick i was, i just kept drinkin water and tried to keep moving.
i was so sick i ended up in hospital, and im still throwing up pretty much atleast once a day now (at 20weeks) but i now try to keep myself occupied, else i would just sit there feeling so sick and sorry for myself.
but anyway thats just how i got through, your bosses should be understanding, and i hope u feel better soon!!

I'm a boss at work and have recently had two kids...you'd think that might make me understanding and to I point I am but when I was pregnant I also thought myself as pregnant, not ill and it was good to know that if I needed it I had those 10 days as a back up (shame they are not paid). I guess what I'm saying is don't use the 10 days lightly as you never know when you really might need them (and yes, working with a headache is the worse)

Hey guys I'm almost 12 weeks and am suffering from hyperemesis (severe nausea and vomitting. I've had it from about 5/6 weeks. I managed work to start off with (I'm a nurse) but haven't been for about the last 3 weeks. I've had 3 hospital admissions due to dehydration. I tried to go back to work last week, but ended up getting sent home. I suffer from dizzy spells, with the low BP etc...Basically I have been housebound for the last 6 weeks. I haven't been able to do anything. If I do I just end up vomiting or nearly fainting. I have lost weight at don't have an ounce of energy. Showering is a BIG mission. I never knew this could be so debilitating. Anyway I'm def off work for the next 2 weeks and will have to see how things go. There's no signs of it dying down yet. I have no sick leave left, and barely any AL, so it is all unpaid. Everytime I ring the boss it goes ok. I suppose they have no choice if I physically can't work. I will reduce my hours when I do go back and ease my way back into it. I have already told work and they said that's ffine. The joys of being pregnant!

hey nursie, yup i was in EXACTLY the same boat as you! im still throwing up at least once a day now, they tried putting me on maxalon but i reacted really badly to that (v v adgitated and angry!) so they put me on ondansetron and it worked wonders!! i also got the herbal morning sickness pills by blackmores and honestly found they were a godsend.
of course u get heaps and heaps of advice from people who have had hyperemesis, and i found eating b4 i got up a waste of time, and just meant that instead of bile coming up, whatever i had was also coming up.
I couldnt shower myself, let alone look after an 18mnth old, so i know how u feel, and i really hope u have family supporting you because my DH's support is what got me through, but if you want to talk or anything with someone who has been through it (and is still going through it!) just PM me ok? goodluck though

I'm not throwing up as such anymore, but I definately feel a violent urge to throw up... I have to sorta pace myself and breathe and try and not be sick. I am affected by smells, I can't be in our kitchen at home without wanting to hurl. I hate it.
