Hi,
Does anyone have a child who is bright but is a late talker (and does not have Autism)? Apart from overseas forums, I can't find any parents with bright late talking children in NZ.
I have read a book by Thomas Sowell called 'Einstein Syndrome' which fits my son perfectly. He is 3.5 years old and knows all his alphabet. He can write each letter without having to copy. He knows his numbers too and can write these also. He has wonderful fine motor skills and fairly good gross motor skills. He's affectionate, sociable & humourous. He loves complex jigsaw puzzles and loves music. HOWEVER he has difficulty expressing himself verbally. Our Develppmental Pediatrician ruled out Autism and global delay but our Ed Psych has written him off and I just can't get my head around why she thinks he basically retarded when he clearly knows a lot more than most children his age. Although, our Devt Ped, Ed Psych & Speech Therapist all admitted they didn't know what to do about our son. They haven't come across a child like mine before.
I'd love to hear from you if your child is bright but a late talker. I'm finding this journey rather frustrating and lonely at times.
Gosh you see a lot of people LOL! Not sure what you mean by difficulty expressing himself. Does he talk at all? is it emotions he doesnt deal with? I dont know a lot of 3.5 yr olds who do express themselves that well, unless it is in a tantrum lol!
My third son didn't really talk until he was 3.5yrs. (A lot later than his brothers) I was concerned enough to get his hearing tested by an audiologist at the hospital, his hearing was fine, and he turned 4 in Feb this year, he does not stop talking now.
