Topic: Help!!! Posted: 14 June 2007 at 8:50pm |
Hi All,
My waters have just broken and the midwife doesn't want to see me until tomorrow... Is that OK?
I am assuming I shouldn't have a bath or anything like that just in case of infection???
Advice is appreciated.
Thanks all
Shell

First of all, good luck!
If you are not having regular contractions, then it shouldn't be a problem that your waters have broken. If there are contractions, and they get regular and close together (whatever you discussed when you made your birth plan with your midwife) call her!
Otherwise, you can always go along to the hospital - you don't have to wait for your midwife to tell you to. It is your body, baby and birth so do what you feel comfortable with. You are in charge, not the midwife.
Don't know about the bath, sorry.

I just discussed this with my MW yesterday...nothing really to worry about unless there is blood or meconium in your waters...? Mop it up with white towels etc. to determine colour. MW also suggested just to be aware to avoid areas where theres a risk of picking up infections - supermarket, shops, etc. and no baths (I think). She said going for a walk can bring on contractions and then head to hospital when contractions are 5:1.

How exciting shell!! Definitely no to having a bath, risk of infection once waters have broken, jump in the shower if you want to clean up.
All the best, hope contractions start for you soon!

Exciting! Are you having contractions? They will probably look at inducing you when your waters have been broken for 24 hours (I think, it might be a bit earlier) so if nothing is happening by morning, go on a walk or something!
Definitely no baths. Showers are fine. Sex is not (if you're one of these who can still go there at 40 weeks ) You can put a pad in, change it regularly and all that. All the best for tomorrow, you'll have the babe in arms by Saturday!
Oh and if things get going through the night, feel free to call your midwife but if it isn't much, let her get good sleep for tomorrow

With my last two bubbas I got contractions before waters (except that I had a hind-water leak with Krystiana a few hours beforehand) and labour was not getting going until I had the waters artificially ruptured (yes, both times). And it came on pretty quick after that.
You'll be fine. This is the moment you've been waiting for, for months remember? If you start to panic make sure you talk it out with your DH and MW and anyone else you have for support. Your MW especially will be able to answer questions, explain problems, and reassure you. All the very best!

Just an update fyi:
Paige Michelle was born yesterday at 1.57 pm via forceps due to fetal distress. she weighed 3 kg (6.6 lb) Both are doing well and ensconced in birthcare now - yay!
Well done to little Paige for being one of the 4% that arrive on their due date!
Can't wait to hear more about the birth and see pictures.
