Hello!

I tried a couple of different cloth nappy brands with my first baby (Fuzzy Bunz & baby first) and ALL of them were gapey around the legs and ALL of them leaked. I don't know if it was because I wasn't fitting them correctly or if the size wasn't right, but it left me frutrated that I had spent money on something that didn't work and left me reluctant to fork out cash for yet another brand.

Having recently had my second baby I would really like to give cloth nappy's a go again. Any recommendations or tips on what to look for when buying a cloth nappy?

There are loads of options out there but the most popular ones around here appear to be itti bittis, either the d'lish range which are sized AIO or snap in nappies or the tutto (which is a one-size-fits-all OSFA nappy and grows with your baby). I think tuttos are particularly good for babies with skinny legs. The other popular ones are Grovia which come in a newborn AIO, OSFA AIO and OSFA snap-in nappy.

Being Cloth Nappy Week there are a few sales on at the moment too.

Have a look at ittibitti.co.nz for itti bittis and chic-cheeks.co.nz for grovia and ittis. You're best to buy a trial pack or a few nappies to try and see how you go. Both ittis and Grovia have really good resale value on trade me should you buy them and they don't work for you.

Also - try doing a search in the cloth nappy thread and you'll find heaps of info about different types of nappies. I think there's even a sticky topic at the top of the thread list with all the different nappy types etc.

For us, the most foolproof, leakproof nappies we have are the cotton prefolds with Bummis covers. The leg holes more or less adapt to fit the size of the baby, depending on how you put them on. This is also the cheapest option.

I think it's a bit of a trial and error process, really, as different nappies fit babies differently. Personally, we have had more leaks with pocket nappies than with any other kind.

I would suggest looking for nappies with adjustable leg holes too. Some of them have elastics with snaps around the leg holes so you can change the size (my Babycheeks pocket nappies have these).

Also, you need to make sure you wash them all quite a few times before you use them, as they don't get up to full absorbency until they've been well washed.

Another thing you could try is a trial hire pack. I know some places offer them but I can't think who off the top of my head!

Here is a quick breakdown of different types of cloth nappies.

I hope someone can give you more information than I have!

Do you still have that fuzzi bunz. Could you try it again. Explain what you've done etc.

We use them and they have never leaked and I have a boy and girl and both wee ALOT.

If it came with only 1 insert and thats all your using you might need to try  it using 2.

second the hire pack idea.
I had two when babyM was tiny, and I loved one brand, liked another, and disliked alllll the rest.
I found fitted nappies with a cover were most reliable. Pockets and AIOs were difficult to fit on a newborn, especially the supposedly 'OSFA' ones.

I had two newborn hire packs and used one of them till she was about three 1/2 months old! they were fitted nappies with covers from YoYo nappies in Nelson. The other hire pack was a 'trial' with lots of different types - depending where you live, you might be able to get one from your local council. Otherwise there is an OhBaby newborn hire kit, and the nappy network also has a list of trial kits available.

With the gapey leg thing - I found covers, or nappies, that have a 'gusset', or double leg opening, fit the best. Have a look at the yoyo nappy website to see what I mean.

Thanks for all the info ladies! All very helpful. Will def look into hire options. I hadn't considered that as an option.

MissShell - cheers for the link, very informative!

Bessi bear - i think the fuzzi bunz i have are just too big (size med for my just 3mth old). I was using 2 inserts and they still leaked. but will try again when he gets a bit bigger.

HeidiWard, I'm pretty sure I started using med fuzzi's on my boy around 5months. So I'd say they are probably too big.
If there is a cloth nappy shop, online or other close to you, then I'm sure they would be more than willing to show you some different nappy systems.

Something that has leg gussets is great for a little bub. As it really does stop leg gapping. Or ones that have velcro I find tend to get a better fit around the legs. At least till they are older and have chubbed up a bit.
Good luck!

Hi Heidi, We love Fuzzis all the way here. I used them fulltime from birth - size SMALL up until 6months or so and then switched to MEDS. Never leaked, just brilliant and so easy to use. Maybe consider buying a stash of smalls?? We use ours with one microfibre insert and one hemp insert, just bought off trade me. Good luck!

Totally agree

We use the Bummis Whisper pants. VERY economical and can handle those impressive poo explosions in the first weeks

The good thing about prefolds is that you're fitting them exactly to the size of your baby, so no gapes. Hold them nice and tight with a 'snappi', cover them up and you're sorted Just add boosters for extra absorbancy as they get older or over night.
