Topic: Toilet Problem...Help!!! Posted: 12 June 2006 at 9:06pm |
Hi Everyone,
My partner and i have come across a problem with our 18 Month old babe!!!
She has got into a habit of when sleeping and waking up from doing poo's, she proceeds to take her nappy off, or even reach in with her hand and smear it everywhere, on her bed, all over herself, and in her mouth!!! as you can imagine its horrible, this is happining approx 4-5 times a week, generally during her afternoon sleep.
whether she has pants on or just a nappy she will always find a way to get in there and pull it out to smear, creating alot of washing and cleaning!!!
its been going on for about 3 weeks and im unsure what to do, im sure shes to young for toilet training yet.
your help would be appreciated.

Hmmmm *ponders* - what about those fluffy over pants? they seem to have a bit more elastic then pants / nappies so may give you a bit more time to get in there and change her before she makes a mess??
If possible - change her sleeping pattern so she is awake when she does poos?
These are all that I can think of at the mo.. Maybe the other girls will have a bright idea!!

it sounds awful, but someone once suggested to me duct tape over the nappies so she can't get them off, oh, and putting the nappies on backwards so the tags are harder to take off.

Maybe for her afternoon sleep you could put her in one of those one'sie suits? You know the ones that button under the fanny? My daughter went through a stage of taking off her nappy in bed over summer and that was the only thing that worked to stop her. (That and getting her up before she had a chance to take it off)

Yeah, I find the whole singlet that does up under the cotch is a good way to stop them doing it, then they can't access the top of the nappy. (Unless they are super good at undo-ing domes!!!)
If that fails then I hope like hell she grows out of it soon!!!

Not that he is into fingerpainting (yet), however Andrew wakes himself up from his morning nap if he poos, so I have taken to waiting that little bit longer for him to poosplode before putting him down for a nap. If it is happening around the same time each day, you could try and change her nap time so that she doesn't have any of the art materials at her disposal in bed? Oh - and 18 months isn't too early for toilet training - I know a few people who have started their kids around there - you could see if she is interested in the potty/toilet. If not, I agree with the other posts - tape her up if necessary.

I'd try the toilet thing. You just might be able to convince her to go before her sleep?
I must admit to using facial expressions that Hannah uses while pooing (just so long as no one else is watching) to encourage her to try Altho it did work!!!

Another way to put a stop to it is to put her nappy on backwards when she goes down for her sleep. If she can't grab the griptabs at the front then she may think that they have gone and stop trying. After a few days of putting it on backwards she may give up and you can put the mappy on the right way again.

I'm with Nikki, try sitting her on the potty in between nappy changes & b4 naptime. Doesnt matter if she doesnt do nything in the potty, its more to get her familiar with it & what its for. Some kids r ready sooner than others - my oldest was 2 & 1/2 b4 we even started tt him but Liam was doing wees on the potty at 12mths.
I do like the idea of the overalls/onesuits. Otherwise do u still have a babycom from wen she was little? U could always set it up & listen out 4 her waking up so u can run in there & hopefully catch her in time

hurricanesmith, I dont have any direct experience for you to draw on but just thought I would let you know that my sister in law told me a few months back that her toddler was doign EXACTLY the same thing - waking up and putting her hands into her nappy and scooping out the poo and putting it everywhere (incl mouth) - she is about 20 months now so sounds the same age too - anyway my SIL just started dressing her in these all in one suits under her pyjamas so she couldnt physically get in there and now that she cant get in she has stopped doing it - it sounds like a phase to me that some kids might go through...good luck.

Hannah did it yesterday at creche!!! One of the teachers walked back into the sleep room to find Hannah looking suitably shocked with "paintings" all over the walls!!! At creche!!!! I'm so embarrassed.
(Am taking small comfort in the fact that I wasn't there so didn't have to deal with the clean up )

gross, although I'd be more than a little happy that I didn';t have to clean up if I were Nikki. And I know a seven year old who did that at a family friends house while on holiday - to annoy her mother who refused to let her have more lollies.
