Thomas is almost 10 months old ... is it ok to occasionally give him rice milk?

The reason I ask is that he hates formula ... and I cant be bothered expressing ... and I really would like a night out/away ... Mum is keen to look after him but he still wakes up for booby once (sometimes twice ... three times ) during the night ... so I was wondering if rice milk would to the trick?

Anyone know what age it is ok for babys to have it?

From 12 months they can have it as occasional (ie on cereal etc.) but not as a main milk drink till at least 2, and some dieticians say until 5.
What about soy formula? Or goats formula? Goats is supposed to be the closest to breast milk and if you call the Karicare number they can send you some sample sachets.

Thanks for that Emma :)

I might try the goats formula then ... Im not looking to replace breastfeeding just looking for something to give him on the odd occasion when I want a night out (and dont plan being home until 4am hehe )

He shouldnt really need a night top up at this age though aye? Theoretically he should be ok with just water ... might be a good way to cut out that night booby he seems to love

For sure! I don't feed my girls if they wake during the night, they get a little bit of water if they want it and then I resettle them. I haven't done a night feed since they were about 5 months.

Hey out of interest what is it about rice milk (calcium enriched) that's not great? My plunket nurse told me to give it to Elle as we are trying to stay clear of dairy. She is still breastfed but I was thinking of slowly weaning to rice milk sometime in the next few months.

It's too low in protein and fat. Maya was on it exclusively from 20 or so months when I stopped giving her the Neocate/Pepti but when the gremlins saw the dietician she said they don't recommend that anymore.

Soy milk (the regular kind) has as much calcium, fat and protein as cows milk, whereas rice milk basically just has calcium. Hannah has been on So Good since she was 12 months. And its really good in cooking/baking too, heaps better than rice milk!
