I feel like this is a bit of a dumb question, but why can't I get into the photo gallery? The category is on my screen but there's nothing to click on!

You have to have 100+ posts; once you hit that it will let you view the photos

Yes it feels like eternity just to get to 100 posts! Then it doesn't seem to take long before you're close to 1000!
