Hi there! Hope you awesome Mums are doing well.
I was wondering if you had any advice for me regarding babysitters.
I'm a SAHM to 10 month old Brian living in Lower Hutt and don't have any family down here. My partner does but his family don't really approve of me and are very open about it so we made the hard decision that if they don't accept me then they can't expect to see their grandson unless it's on our terms - it's too hard.
I go to a SPACE class on Mondays and that's great for me. I also keep in touch with my workmates over the phone. However, if my partner and I want to go out for dinner or anything we can't because we don't know anyone who can babysit for us (and my inlaws are not an option).
Do you ladies have any advice for me on getting reliable babysitters?
Thanks!

You could try Student Job Search.
I got babysitting jobs from there when I was childless!

At the moment, I have a deal going with a few of my mummy friends where we do babysitting exchanges. It is great as I feel so comfortable leaving Han with other mothers. The night-time outings are usually with my next door neighbour which is even more advantageous

If all else fails, I could do it for a special occassion until you get someone sorted - Despite not knowing me from a bar of soap! I'm on the other side of Wellington, so as a regular babysitter I wouldn't be suitable, but I know how much of a pain in the butt it is to be stuck at home with a baby

Oooo that sounded really bad... but realistically, you do need to be able to spend some time with your partner away from home. (I'm just extra bitter sometimes because these are meant to be the drunken years of my life )

what about asking at local schools? nowadays lots of high schools are offering Early childhood as a subject course and you might find someone suitable. You could leave them during the day for a couple of hours and see how they go, and graduate to night time. if they live nearby they will have parents available if anything happens too.

Thanks everyone!
Nikki I've registered with Student Job Search although they tell me that the average hourly rate for babysitting is $13 - it's high for us being on one income, but if they're the right person then that's OK.
We'll see how it goes and I'll keep you posted!!
