Topic: Pregnancy Yoga ... Posted: 16 June 2007 at 4:05pm |
Just wondering if any of you are doing or have done pregnany yoga? If so when did you start?
I see they run a 10 week programme and they say it's suitable from 12 + weeks. I kinda though it would be something you'd do later on in your pregnancy???
Any info would be great. Thanks

i suppose if you started too late you wouldnt be as flexible and might not be able to get in the positions needed.

I'm thinking of giving it a go. Will probably start in July after I get back from my holiday. I've heard positive things about it.

It is good to start sooner rather than later and they will build on it as you go along. I dont think they like you doing it until the 2nd trimester. I started at 13 weeks but only lasted a few weeks before it got too difficult with transport etc. It was good but boy was I unco!!!! Think it would have been really good to keep going. Now it clashes with my antenatal classes.

I started late, at about 24 weeks, where I went they didn't let you start after 25 or 26 weeks if you hadn't done any before then, something to do with being too far along and pushing your body to do things it's not used to doing with all the relaxin in your system? I think?
I did a restorative yoga class (Iyengar yoga) and loved it. It was on a Friday night, a one and half hour long class and I felt so good afterwards. We did lots of positions to open up your pelvis and stretch out your back and help focus your mind. I used some of the relaxation stuff in early labour but am not sure how much it helped at the later stages. If/when I am pregnant again I'll be going back as early as possible.
I say go for it!

Thanks ladies.
I see there is a course starting 19th July and I would be 14 weeks, so I think I will enrol in that.
I have always been really active and both my midwife and doctor said to keep it up as being fit and healthy can make the pregnancy a lot easier as well as the labour and recovery. Fingers crossed

Hi
I've been to classes for the last 2 weeks, and there looked to be a range of bump sizes. I emailed them before going, and they said some people start coming at 11 weeks.
The one I am going to is very very gentle and would be suitable for anyone. The relaxation is fantastic.

I have been dong preggy yoga pretty much since about 10 weeks, through classes and also a DVD. I love it!!
Gives you some great stretches to do when you have a sore back and also helps turn those naughty babies who want to face the wrong way.
If you cant do the poses they will show you an easier version more suitable, or if they think you can do a bit more will do the same.

I started going to a lunchtime class close to where I work (started at about 16 weeks) but found it to stressful trying to get away from work in time to get to class and then get back to work.
I enjoyed it - even though I found it pretty tough, I think lots of the ladies there had done yoga before, and I did feel like a complete un-co most of the time, and couldnt do a lot of the poses.
To be honest the timing of the classes prob un-did all the good work of the class, as by the time I had rushed back to work I was stressed again.

Simsam, there's a place in Takapuna (Yoga Tree) that I've heard good things about. They aren't cheap, but offer classes after work and on Saturday mornings. I think I'll give it a go next month. I'm pretty un-co as well, so it should be interesting!

No I don't live in Auckland Sally Belly, but I'm sure if you did a search on the net you'd find plenty of places there that run courses.
