Topic: Big Beds.... Posted: 15 April 2007 at 5:47pm |
When did your little ones move to proper beds. My boy will be 18mths when the new baby is born so do we start looking for another cot or move him to a bed.
Also I've seen those beds shaped like cars/trucks etc with higher sides, are they any good to stop them falling out or do they just climb over the sides?
Thanks

we moved kobe into a big bed at 18mths no problems at all. he didnt even attempt to get out of it and we were planning on slowly putting him in it for day sleeps then nights etc... but the minute it was up he was in there and wouldnt ahve a bar of his cot.
We got him a race car bed and it has the higher sides which have been fantastic. For a start we got a foam mattress cos they are thinner so made the sides higher. Now he has just moved to a innersprung mattress and there is still a bit at the sides to keep him in if needed.

Why not maybe just put the mattrass on the floor? Either that or put him in a big bed with a mattrass next to his bed for if he falls?
You get safety railings as well. McKayla can climb out of the cot so didnt tried to move her back into it when it came over, so still sleeping with us. Will move her hopefully when she is 2.

18months
haleigh started climbing out of her cot at 17months and we thought seen as bubs will be here in under 3months we may as well get her in ehr bed now.
so we got one of those slat beds form the warehosue with a foam mattress and she lvoes it, first night slept like a baby, it was also when we changed our clocks and she slept in to which was a bonus for us.
we never had issues with ehr falling out, i have a pillow beside her on the edge tucked in with her sheets and she cuddles it but she usefd to fall asleep on the couch to without falling off the edge.

Have a look on TM Emma, there might be some cool beds on there that have small mattresses and cot sides. Otherwise you can buy a cot side seperate from places like the Baby Factory. I am sure you could even find one on TM.

I was really worried about putting Jake in his big boy bed as he was the WORST sleeper - always ended up with arms and legs flayling about and being at the worng end of the cot, BUT when we put him in the bed, he stayed quite still. he has fallen out a total of twice in a year, and he very very rarely will get out without being told. I was amazed how easy this was....I bet I have jinxed myself for Taine though.

I started Ethan off during the days with his bed so he could get used to it. He was about 18mnths old. We got a bunk bed. One of those ones that you can have it as two singles. We only put together the top half cos it has the sides all around, and then we slept Ethan at the other end to where the ladder would normally go. Worked a treat, didn't fall out, and he got the hang of getting out own the bottom of the bed.

17 and 15mos here. Hannah had to move out so Briona could move in lol... and Briona had to move out before she climbed! With both of them we put a mattress on the floor next to the bed but neither of them fell out. It was quite helpful as a step up though.

We had the bed set up in Jakes room from early on, so its always been there, and he liked to play on it, and since christmas, play nigh nigh's and pretend go to sleep. He wasn't keen on going into it for sleeping untill 2 weeks ago and he had an enourmous tanty about wanting to go in it, so I put him in it, and he loves it. Was awesome it was his own "idea", and the cars and trucks duvet we bought for it helped as well. Just had a really cry baby mummy moment when we shifted the cot out and put up another single in there Charly is in the cot now though, so I still have one baby!

We put Arna in a bed when she was about 18 months old too, we went out one Saturday and brought her a duvet cover of her choice (pick a few out and put them on the floor or bottom shelf and get them to choose one of those)
When you get home make a big deal of it (get them to pass you the pillow so you can put the new pillow case on etc) and because they are so excited they want to sleep in it! (she didnt look at her cot from that day on!)
Just put the cot mattress or something beside the bed just in case - but Arna never fell out of bed or anything
I personally wouldn't bother buying another cot (unless you want to buy ours!) - would only use it for a month or so before it is time for the big bed.
Good Luck

we had bunks already (got them for hubbys son and any kids to be) and gabriel used to sleep on the bottom bunk for day naps for a while before we did nights. we took the cot down completely tho when we started night sleeps in the bed and used a bed rail i got from my sister. in hindsight tho i dont think the rail was really needed. toby has slept a couple of nights in a bed at my mums place - top and tailing with gabriel - and has had no problems. he has also had a few day sleeps in a bed too but only if he falls asleep in the car and i transfer him there.

I am thinking about putting Joey straight into a big bed when we move into our new house (cross fingers - should be some time this century). Do you ladies think it would be too much new house and new bed or best to get it all over at once?? Thanks for any comments or suggestions...

Hi NewMum, most kids find moving home rather stressful so enjoy their cot still there because it's one familiar thing. You could change him from cot to bed at least a month before moving, but I wouldn't do it on the day. I sounds like it would save heaps of trouble but when I moved Hannah to a bed it was also to a new bedroom and that was tough enough!

Jack will be 17 months when our new bub comes but it will go in a bassinet so we will have a few extra months and then prob go into a bed. We have been offered another cot for $50 and its almost brand new so we have decided to just wait and see with Jack. If we weren't getting that cot it would of been straight into a bed.

we put jack in his big boy bed the night of his 2nd birthday. it was a couple of months before charli was due and we wanted to get him settled into his new bed without having to worry about a newborn as well.
as it turned out, he never had any problems adjusting to the change

Theresa - Yeah I wondered about that too. The thing is that he has been sleeping in a porta cot at my mums for the past 2 months anyway so might need time to ge used to his cot again too - if that makes sense? (His ot is in storage)

How about setting up his bed in his new room but also putting the portacot in there for a week or so to start with?
