I was wondering when they start too. for me they felt like i was pushing my tummy out and my bump would go all hard completely painless. Towards the end they felt a bit more like mild period pains.

They are more annoying than anything. Don't usually get them in the first pregnancy so when you get them in the second its a little shock. Period pain and very light contractions is a good way of discribing them. Towards the end of the pregnancy you have to keep a watch on them just in case they are the real thing. Usually get them from 25 weeks onwards maybe earlier maybe later just depends.

This is how I see it. BH and contractions both harden your tummy, pressing down (contracting) the uterus. The difference with contractions is that you can also feel them on the inside and that's the 'ouchie'. I didn't realise until pg #3 that BH can also pull a bit in your back, generally they are painless.
I had BH from 20 weeks with pg#1 and pg#3 but only in the last week or so with #2 - barely at all. They get harder as you get closer to birth. Apparently they are actually there from as early as 6 weeks but not able to be felt until later on.

I thought this was a bit too early to be feeling them (14.5 weeks) but its certainly seems like what they are!
Are they dangerous to get this early??

I don't think they are "dangerous" maybe call your MW and she could put your mind at ease about them.

I started to experience them 'early' at about 20 weeks, but after a while they weren't so 'painless' anymore LOL

The pains you are experiencing may be stretching pains as well? I had them for ages and ages. BH usually come later I think? Ask your MW if you are worried about them.

I've done a search on "braxton hicks" and it seems that most people describe them as a tightening of your tummy which doesn't last very long. I've been having some odd pains which don't feel like they're in my tummy/uterus but rather in my erm how do I put this *back passage*.
Could these be BH or something else? The pains last 20 secs or so & are a little painful

I started noticing BH around 20 weeks I think and lately I've had some period type cramping as well which may or may not be related.

I started getting BH around 16 weeks, which is pretty early. My midwife said it's harmless, just means that my uterus will be super-toned Our AN class instructor said most people start getting them between 18-28 weeks. Mine just feel like my tummy hardens, I can definitely feel it... like having a ball in my tummy. Usually only lasts about 10-20 seconds (ish)... mine aren't really painful, but again the AN instructor said its different for everyone, there is apparently "no rhyme or reason" to why some people feel them earlier and why some people have more painful ones than others.

I had BH from about 13wks (apparently early). During these early weeks I did wonder if it was sort of bowel related - they can feel like the cramps you get when you need to go #2. When I described them to my mw as a tightening of my belly she said they were BH.
From about 17-30 weeks they were strongest in the evening, and were a good way to be able to feel the lumps of the baby.
More recently they have been strong down the bottom of my belly and enough pressure to sort of squeeze my bladder (or that's what it feels like). I think I've also noticed less BH over the last few weeks, even though everything you read says you get more at this stage. My mw said that was ok.

Sometimes a baby facing the wrong way means you feel them in your back, but in the passage seems a bit odd

On reflection, the pains could just be b/c I am slightly constipated (sorry TMI). Baby is head down & anterior so seems to be in the right position.
