    Posted: 16 June 2013 at 1:09pm
Hi I'm 27 years old DH and I have been together 8 years in July and married for a year and a half. I went off BCP in Nov 12 and have been TTC since. I have had AF once in April 13 (137 day cycle) and had strong cramps and tender breasts starting two weeks before AF so think that I did O. I had been on BCP's for 6 years. Pre BCP's I had irregular cycles usually 1 AF every 3 months. I am not overweight or underweight (63kgs / 160cms). Currently on CD 67. Went and saw Dr in March and was told to wait a year. Currently on 7 mth TTC so if anyone has any suggestions on what might be wrong or what to do to shorten cycles that would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of people have had quite a bit of success with vitex, its a supplement which helps to regulate your cycle.
You would have to look it up to see where you could get it from (local health stores etc)
Kiara is 3 and Teagan is 2, now we're expecting our long awaited 3rd!

Natalie look on baby4you website they've this product called Femaprin - Vitex which has some amazing stories that I found when I googled it. I got myself some which I'm going to take for next cycle if not successful as I didn't believe I was Ov and thought this might help. Luckily I am currently Ov so not to sure now lol anyway it looks great.
I've long cycles too 40 days currently nowhere near as long as yours thou, but this might be worth a try?

Nat, it might not help, but my friend and her DH just conceived and she only had 3 periods last year! And one this year! She was on something crazy like cd50-something when she thinks she ovulated! It's mad, and must be frustrating but it can and does happen
You could try Vitex though, or acupuncture? I'm thinking about taking Vitex but I don't know enough about it yet.. Still researching.. I'm having trouble with my cycles since suffering a loss early this year!

Hi Nat,

I know how awful it is having super long cycles - so frustrating!!

I took vitex for a while and it seemed to help a bit (I think??) but I have since gone off it just because I didn't feel right taking it (personal choice) after I had a miscarriage. (the miscarriage was nothing to do with the vitex, I just don't want to put anything in my body unless it's Dr/Acupuncturist approved!).

I really recommend seeing a fertility acupuncturist. My cycle used to be around 54 days and now I have been seeing my acupuncturist for 4 months, they are down to 36 days. Could be an idea for you??

Also try keeping your uterus warm, I have a hot water bottle on my stomach every night and I also try to eat warm foods and no cold drinks from the fridge. Sounds weird but apparently it helps!!!

I'm still sort of new to this - but do think those with long cycles and CM randomly throughout is a sign of PCOS
just learning about it?

Thanks Julietta I have bought some vitex today and will start it tomorrow and see what happens. I will have a look into trying acupuncture too.

Birdy83 - I have had a read up on PCOS and found the below about it. The irregular cycles definitely fits with me but second physical symptoms don't so not sure.

"To have an accurate diagnosis of PCOS there are a number of factors. Firstly, less than 8 menstrual cycles a year or cycles which are greater than 35 days. Secondly physical symptoms related to an increase in androgen hormones including acne, excess body hair or thinning hair. Sometimes PCOS can lead to problems with fertility, and this can require the help of assisted reproductive technologies such as ovulation medication, IUI or IVF.

UPDATE: Just thought I'd do a quick update for anyone in a similar situation. Tried vitex for 2 months nothing happened so stopped taking it. Currently on cycle day 178! Visited doctor yesterday and have had blood tests and referred to fertility specialist. Will update again once I know more.

Hi Nat
I've just started on the Vitex at the start of this cycle all the research I've done suggests taking as long as you can as it can take up to 3 months to sort your system out apparently I'm gonna give it a really good go as so far I'm ok on it only thing I had to do was change from taking it in the morn to night time as on a empty stomach didn't help with me being a little lactose intolerant. I am really hoping it does shorten my cycle thou and ends up obviously with the best situation of a healthy little bun in the oven

UPDATE: I am happy to report that I got pregnant naturally before making a specialist appointment and I'm currently at 13 weeks. Had to have a dating scan as no AF since April but blood tests in early Oct had showed no ovulation. So it took us 11 months in total with only 1 AF during that time.
