Topic: going private??? Posted: 13 November 2011 at 11:38am |
Hey ladies
1st of I think I have pcos I have irregular cycles, I do ov my july cycle was a normal cycle with ov 14days b4 af. but since ov has been 6-9days b4 af and my cycles 35 - 55days, I have had cycles like this since I hit puberty its the oving so close to af that has me worried. I am over weight so yes I know that is proberbly half my battle right there.
anyway...
what tests need doing to check for pcos?
can a gp order these or do I have to see Gyne?
I would prefer to not sit on a waiting list for a yr so I am open to private, can anyone recommend someone in south auckland or even hamilton?

Hi Rorylex,
I'm far from a PCOS expert! But mine was diagnosed with a simple blood test that my GP ordered. I'm not sure what she tested for (she said she was testing for practically everything!) but my testosterone levels came back high. So she referred me to a scan which confirmed PCOS. I then went to Fertility Associates (privately, although it was covered by health insurance) and she got me exercising even though my weight was fine, and that seemed to do the trick.
Like you, I've been luckily enough to conceive, but my cycles are still all over the place.
Also, I remember ladies here sometimes take Vitex to help with their LP, but I forget if that was to lengthen it or shorten it.
Good luck with ttc #5!

Hi Rorylex, sorry to hear your cycles are a bit out of whack!
I do have poly cystic ovaries, but not the syndrome. So I have cysts but I get no symptoms. For me, I was diagnosed by having an ultrasound as all my blood tests came back normal, including testosterone.
I went through my gynae to have the ultrasound, and it was covered by my medical insurance. I think without insurance, the appt with my gynae was $250, then another maybe $250 for the ultrasound.
Good luck, hope you get it all sorted soon. There are some natural things that can help sort out cycles, like vitex or Vitamin B6. Vitex is supposed to regulate cycles and B6 is meant to help lengthen the luteal phase. Hope that helps

Hey Rorylex, I have PCOS and are currently trying to TTC, my cysts come and go so won't necessarily get picked up - however I would have thought after 4 that they would have picked them up at some point.
I would suggest trying B6 as Lou said and if that doesn't work then go private.
Good luck!

Hi RolyLex. PCOS is different for everyone. I got diagnosed by seeing my GP. He sent me off for a blood test. After 2 years of trying I haven't been able to get pregnant so last month I went and found a great Private Gynocologist. She costs about $160 per session. But I only really needed to see her twice. The first time she scanned me to check my ovaries and confirm the PCOS she also gave me a prescription for Clomid to regulate my cycles and make sure I ovulate each month. The second was to get another scan to make sure the clomid was doing it's job. Then I get a blood test each month to make sure I'm ovulating.
The side effects are mild but annoying lol. Hot flushes, sore boobs, mild cramps, tirdness. But I think it's worth it. I was lucky to get AF once every 2 or 3 months before. And there's was no gaureentine that I was ovualting. She also told me that with PCOS charting is a waste of time and that OV tests can give you false positives.
Best of luck!

There are a number of reasons for irregular cycles, but PCOS definitely is one. Like others have said, a scan is the way to know for sure if you do have them, and would probably be worth checking. I can't speak for Auckland, but in Hamilton it costs the same to self-refer and go privatly to FA as it does if your Dr refers you. In saying that, although I self-referred I went to my Dr first, and that was handy as she did blood tests to check where things were at.
I wouldn't have said charting with PCOS is a waste of time per se, but it's no use as a means of knowing when to BD if you're not ovulating to any pattern or not ovulating at all. I did find it very handy to see what was happening, though, as I was one of the unlucky ones who rarely if ever oved on clomid. I did find what lisa said about ov tests, they just always came back positive

Dont' write off charting and/or Ov tests either...I have PCOS and find that both are great for me!! I can see a clear pattern of OV on the months that I do through my temps (which have been confirmed by scans etc) and also my OPKs while often have a very very faint second line, I get a very clear fade in and positive back to negative around OV (again confirmed to be correct by scans).
I think the biggest thing I have learnt over my PCOS/TTC journey is that there are no rules around PCOS and everyones symptoms are different as is what works for each person

oh thanks ladies, I have used opk's before and they do pick up ov and dont seem to give me false positive's and the give me very obvious positives only when i am oving but LH surge lasts 3-4days and LP is 6-9days.
have just bought more vitex and some b6 to try will take it til it runs out i suppose and see if there is any improvement. I will go to gp to get bloods done I am pretty sure i have ov'd I usually find when I do ov my ovaries surely let me know about it so af should be here in the next week, bfp would be better but not counting on it and quite honestly I want to find out what is actually going on before preg. this is the 1st time in a long time that there has been no reason for cycles to be so irregular, i was preg with ds2 too soon after ds1 to see a pattern and then I was bfing after ds2 until preg with ds3 but it was regular for a few months b4 ds3, b4 ds4 it was same as now really just no problem with LP so didnt take long even with long cycles. going on 13mths now, I am certainly glad I have 4 children already I cant imagine going through all this the 1st or 2nd time round.
