I am having some tests to see if I have an imnflammatory bowel disease eg ulcerative colitis or chrons disease.
It's scary but would help to explain some things that have been going on with me for a long time.
Was wondering if anyone on here had had any experience of this? And what tests you had/ how it's affected your life?

Hi, have you got any info on this yet?
My mum has Chrons disease and they thought I had it too. I had to have a colonoscopy, the 2 days before it were pretty horrible as you have to go on a no fibre diet and then eat only clear fluids and drink heaps of laxative stuff to make sure you are all cleaned out. But the actual procedure wasn't bad at all, I had worked myself up thinking it would be really sore and stuff but I didn't even really feel it. PM me if you want to know more

My cousin has ulcerative colitis. He had to completely adjust his diet and he found selenium really helped (so did my dad who had IBS for years only to discover he had coeliacs). Hope you get the answers you need to get healthy again x

A good friend of mine has had Chrons for around 8 years now (she's 25). Currently it seems to be affecting her and she is due to have a gastrostopy (the camera down) and also a colonoscopy. She has had these at least twice before- also when she was diagnosed.
For the most part hers is managed through drugs and diet, though it hasn't really affected her life much- she still went traipsing through Africa recently and keeps fairly active.

hi wj, I have ulcerative colitis. I have had it for about 12 years now. There is a lot that I can tell you about it. I have a son and is preggo again. So perhaps instead of spamming you with sheets of info...is there anything you would like to know? Open to talk about anything you need. You can PM me too if you don't want to discuss things here. It gets hard at times and it can get you down when things flare up but it is pretty controlable and you shouldn't get too down about it. The meds have improved dramatically over the last couple of years so things are looking up.
Let me know what you want ot know.

They usually do a sigmoidoscopy in a dr room if they think it is the bottom bit. If they think it might be higher up too you will be booked for a colonoscopy and they put you under to do it. The sigmoidoscopy is uncomfortable...I won't lie to you. They usually take a biopsy/tissue sample while they are there too to check if it is uc or chrons. They might also do blood tests to check your inflammation markers to see how high they are to guage the extent of the disease. The tests aren't scary. Like I said the sigmoidoscopy is the most uncomfortable but quickest and the colonoscopy less so but you do have to spend half a day in hosp or clinic as they put you under and you feel yucky afterwards. Don't worry abt the tests they aren't too bad and don't hurt.

Hi there thanks heaps for all your replies. Sorry I haven't written back I have only just read them as I haven't been on ohbaby much in the last week.
Well I had the blood tests to check for inflammation markers, but it seems nothing out of the ordinary showed there, Im not sure though as I called to follow up results and it was the nurse who I talked to not GP and she didn't seem to know anything about being able to see inflammation in blood tests.
So now Im a bit confused. I guess I have to see my GP again to see what to do next. If nothing showed in the blood tests, does that mean I don't have it, or could I still have it but it didn't happen to show that day? I had just come off 2 weeks of really bad symptoms but was ok again when I had the tests.
I had been told previously since I was 10 that I had irritable bowel syndrome and up until this year my symptoms have been very much typical of that but this year since having baby, my symptoms have changed, much more painful, and just a lot different to the IBS. So I'm not convinced there's nothing wrong, and it's definitely not normal what's happening (terrible stomach cramps either with a stomach upset or just normal bowel movement), some bleeding at times, night sweats, low iron etc... it has come and gone throughout this year been really bad for a week or two every day then settled down, but tummy always feels a bit sore..
Its very confusing
ETA Im 25 which is supposedly around the time it can start to happen?
