My wee boy is almost 10 wks old and sometimes when he was feeding, he will pull off, get all stiff (head thrown back, legs straight, back straight or arch backward) and refuses to get back on the breast even when it is only the start of his feed. I almost always struggle to feed him at his early evening feed at around 5/6pm. Walk around or jiggling him while nursing sometimes help...

My boy has silence reflux and has been on medication since he was 6 weeks old. However I don't think this is reflux related as his cries are quite different and it doesn't happen at every feed.

Could this be caused by him being tired? I noticed that this problem occur more likely when he hasn't had a good sleep prior to his feed.

Does anyone else come across similar issue?

We went through this at about the same age. Never worked out really what it was but it just sorted its self out after a week or 2.

For us the pattern was that it got worse as the day went on; morning feeds were perfectly fine, then afternoon feeds were a bit fussy/pulling off but she still had a reasonable feed but then the last feed before bed was horrible screaming, refusing to feed etc - sounds like a similar pattern to you.

Weirdly what I did for that awful evening feed was give 50ml of EBM in a bottle first then she'd be perfectly happy to go onto the breast for the rest of the feed. It made me wonder whether it was something to do with my let down or a change in her sucking efficiency or something.

Also like you distracting her (jiggling, bottom patting etc) helped. But what I'd need to do was jiggle/bottom pat (whatever) with boob out ready but not trying to latch her, then when I felt she was distracted I'd latch her whilst still jiggling/bottom patting and weirdly this often also let her start the feed without the drama.

Anyway, as I said it did resolve its self. Hope yours does too.

Could it be diet related??

It might be worth chatting to your doctor again, my first thought was reflux as that is exactly what DS was like, but at every feed, but you say it doesnt seem the same, so perhaps not.

I found when DS was really bad I would have to walk around with him to get him/keep him latched on and kind of do a jiggle type thing atthe same time like thesaff explained.

It could still be diet related and not affect every feed. If it's happening at the same time every day, it could well be something you are eating at the same time every day coming into your milk at that point. I'd suspect if that's the case its something you have once a day only.

It could also be overtired, but with DD, often overtired isn't so much the problem, but that something else she could normally get over becomes a problem cos she's not got the same energy to overcome it, you know?

Good luck, and hopefully it's a short-lived phase

We are having the same issue during the evening feed as well. I just put his dummy in his mouth, and then take it out and put him back on the boob.

We used to have the same problem, I find taking him off and switching to the other side works. I might need to do it a couple of times but he eventually calms down and feeds properly.

My DS also has reflux and I suspect like T Rex says, something I eat triggers it throughout the day. Having removed dairy from my diet I suspect it may be caffeine from the odd tea/coffee.

Oh interesting about diet related. DS does the same thing sometimes still! I wonder if thats the problem will test and see. More on topic: he started doing it from about 3 months with the same pattern, fine in the morning getting more and more scratchy towards the evening. I couldnt walk with him, big lump that he is, but i'd jiggle my knees and pat his bum and shhhh or switch sides/positions. He now only has the occasional scratchy evening so keep at it, im sure it'll get better soon!

Thanks ladies :)

Will try to keep track on diet and see how we go. I have already cut out dairy due to Sean's relux. I think hot chocolate and dark chocolate will have to go too (Just read an article online yesterday about caffeine going through to the breast milk...)

I've written down a few things to try/change. Hopefully this feeding issue will go away soon...

When you say you've cut out dairy do you mean any and all dairy products or do you just mean milk, cheese, yoghurt?
