Topic: LLL Posted: 06 July 2011 at 8:20pm |
Hi ladies, I am hoping to get some help from some of you who have attended/attend Le Leche League meetings.
I am a part of the Nelson league and we are looking to recruit more regular participants, as far as I've been told, LLL used to be strong here, but has dwindled a lot in the last few years (the first meeting I went to it was just me and the one leader we have).
Any advice or recommendations would be great, what would you like to see done at meetings? What do you usually do?
If you don't already attend a meeting, what would entice you to go? etc etc
We are having a team meeting on Friday so I'm hoping to go armed with heaps of ideas.
Thanks in advance

I have noticed in my doctors office they have a poster up saying the LLL meets here and has a list of topics for each meeting which i thought was a great idea. They had little bookmark sized bits of paper with the dates and topics to take away too. If i wasnt already going i would have gone as a result of those little bookmarks.
I guess its harder to lure people in, but when you do get someone its nice to feel welcome and included. Our leader rings the day before to remind about meetings and say she looks foward to seeing us which makes me feel special and she always remembers DSs name and asks about whatever issue i'd brought up the meeting before so i feel special and listened too. She must take damn good notes!! And they have a facebook group and weve done other things like babywearing and its not all lactivism. And there is often a cake. And they welcome all kids not just babies, so lots of toddlers and some woman bring their porse extras too. And they have a big library of breastfeeding books to borrow.

Same as Bowie..... I think word of mouth is your best bet. Also LLL posters in libraries, cafes that mums might go to etc?
I love how mt 2 groups welcome everyone, are non judgemental and have awesome books to borrow for free!
and the cake is always good too lol

I really should go to the Nelson one considering I live here! The only problem for me is its all the way in town (Tahuna?) and I never go in that far if I can help it. I think alot of people dont know that they are there and also have no idea what they do/talk about. I havent seen any info around the place about them.

I think that probably is it with us Wriggles, it was only because I went looking for it after we moved here that I found it. You should definitely come to the next meeting, it's held at the Tahuna Playcentre so kids have a ball running around.
The LLL I went to back in Palmy was similar to what you've described Bowie, so I'll take that info with me tomorrow.
Thanks so far ladies, all very helpful

I would go if our area had a website I could go to look up details rather than having to phone (I just don't like talking to people on the phone, weird I know)
Also was wondering, do you have to be actively Breastfeeding a child to join? I'm in between feeding children atm :D

Kiara is 3 and Teagan is 2, now we're expecting our long awaited 3rd!

There are often email addresses on the LLL website, but I know what you mean, I'd rather email or something rather than call too.
And no, you absolutely don't have to be breastfeeding to go along to a meeting. Often pregnant women go along, and that is really encouraged. Anyone is welcome

Forgot to say we have a couple of m/w students coming along perhaps you could invite any local students you have, they might not have considered it.

We set up a local LLL fb page, we went to antenatal classes and spoke there, had some talks at plunket, put posters up in libraries, baby shops, preschools etc, with a list of the topics we would be discussing.
It really helped, we have a strong core group of 5, plus a leader, plus quite a few regular attendees now.
I think it is important to get out there and talk to people, as a lot of women have some pretty strong misconceptions about what LLL is, and the type of women that go.

Haha, Bowie, I was a bit apprehensive about what to expect the first time too. Maybe some photos of *normal* mums feeding *normal* babies/toddlers on the fliers then?

I overheard a conversation between two women about LLL
Woman 1: OMG - Karen is going to a LLL meeting
Woman 2: NO WAY
Woman 1: Yes, I don't think she knows about the contract you have to sign - saying you'll breastfeed your child until they are 5
Woman 2: Really, theres a contract?
I was wondering if I should jump in and correct them, but I couldn't stop laughing!

They can't be serious!!! You should have stepped in and been like ladies, you are mistaken. You have to breastfed until they are 8.
