I was induced with gel at 13 days overdue and contractions started within 2hrs. DS was born about 12hrs after the contractions started... About 6hrs in I was still only 1cm dilated though.
Good luck!! It'll be all over before you know it and you'll have your baby!!

I was induced with gel at about 9/10pm at night. They did a second lot of gel in the morning and waters broke at 9am. DD arrived at 10:20pm that night. So 24 hours from having the first lot of gel to DD arriving.

Good luck!

i had the gel in all my inductions (3). a lot will depend on how ready your body is. you cant expect the gel to just do it all without you helping out either though. the thing to do is keep moving once they start with the induction. all the best - and dont let what happens to others affect you.

I was examined and told cervix was high and tightly closed, DS was barely engaged and i wasnt at all ready to go into labour - i begged - he agreed to give me gel just to see what would happen on the condition if nothing happened by the morning i had to go home and wait. This was at about 3pm. Had 'period pain' throughout the night and when he arrived at 9am to check me i was 3cm dialated, he broke my waters and DS was born at 3.20 that afternoon. My midwife told me to keep moving after i was induced so i waddled down the stairs and outside where it was 38 degrees so i toddled back up to the ward for a lie down lol. You will probably hear a lot of horror stories about induction but mine was brilliant.

For insertion to birth for me was about 8 hours. I was 2cm when they put the gel in so I'm sure that helped. I was in active labor within about 2 hours. It was a good experience for me too.

I had two inductions, both reasonably good experiences (as good as birth can be!)

I had gel with my second but ended up with a drip after 6hrs anyway. I agree with Bizzy, lots of walking around the hospital - espcially because if you end up on a drip then you will be stuck on a bed.

BUT on the other hand, I had a friend who had gel with her first child, she had it at 7pm and the baby was born at 11pm that same night... fantastic outcome!

I think how far you are along makes a HUGE difference. I was only 38.5 weeks, ended up with 4 doses of the gel over 3 days, zero dilation, c-section on the 4th day. So yeah, my body was NOT ready!! 40 weeks plus should be a totally different story.

I had gel on my due date, 1 lot at 9ish am and then another at 2pm (cause nothing was happening), nothing continued to happen, but then at 1am the next morning my waters broke spontaneously and my baby girl was born 3 hours later at 4am, too quick for drugs lol.
I didn't need the drip which was cool :D

I had a failed induction with gel I was 41w5d.I had the maximum amount of gel allowed over 2 days with no result I only got to 1cm, on the 3rd day I was given the option to go home and come back the next day so we did, when back at the hospital I was examined so he could try to break my waters but was unable to, so I got the option of trying more gel or cs I chose the cs only becuase I was well and truly over it by then, I was physically and emotionally exhausted and I just wanted my baby.

I was never given the drip, don't think it was even discussed.

Thanks guys, think it seems like it depends on the person and baby and then keep active as much as you can!

I was 16 days over and had gel at 9am the morning of my booked induction - I got to 6cm by I think it was about 2pm but bubba still wasnt engaged so I asked to be put on the drip to get things moving faster - the MW was pretty keen to get me hooked up so she could go home! Anyway by 11pm I was in having a c/s but that was just because my wee one was posterior and in a funny spot still not engaged so if it hadnt been for that I imagine it would have been a much faster labor!

Good luck and like the others have said - its over before you know it

Hi,

I had about three applications of gel in a day and a half and then eventually they broke my waters. Was v tedious and labour didn't start naturally. Ended up having a c-section.

Good luck!

Yup 5 applications of gel over 3 days at 38 weeks, didnt dialate a bit. I think eventually the registrar got bored of seeing me so managed to fit the amnio hook up to break my waters. 2 hours later my girl was born by emergency c-section as the umbilical cord descended before she did and so every contraction blocked her blood flow, slowing her heart rate to near to zilch.

Long and short of it. Induction sucess stories at 38 weeks arent very common, at 40+ weeks Ive heard tonnes. Babies come when babies are ready lol

Oh and I spent 3 days waddling, jiggling, bouncing, skipping my way around the domain, in the hottest Feb on record, in an effort to get things moving, all it achieved was an exhausted mummy and very swollen feet!

Same type of experience as Bowie here. I was induced at 38.4 weeks due to GD, they put the gel in that night and I was given a bishops score of 0 so cervix was high and closed, and told it looked like I was not going to have baby anytime soon. I had period type pains (but worse) over night and when they checked me in the morning I was 2cm dialated and they broke my waters, my daughter was born 4 hours later and all in all my experience was good, my only issue was an epidural that did not work and a lure that they had put in my arm which was never used but ended up meaning that I could not use my right arm during labour or for a day or so after as they had so much trouble getting a vain.

All the best for your induction
