Topic: Help! Desperate for a good gp!!! Posted: 19 June 2011 at 11:41am |
Hi there
I am desperate for a GREAT GP that really knows children and takes active interest in their care. Current doctor has a cavalier attitude and unwilling to look into issues further by recommending a specialist or other options.
Preferably east auckland but will drive for the right doctor.
Have 1 child with serious #2 issues. The baby is 9mths and will not eat any food - not interested, only wants milk. Vomits and gags when i try to give her food. And i have tried many different foods.
Many thanks.

Join the club - MOST Drs are woefully inadequate IMO.. And then if you find a rare good one the clinic will not be taking on patients guaranteed.. This is a serious issue in Palmerston North where only ONE clinic was taking on patients and they run more like a factory line processing meat than they do caring health professionals
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your kids - I really hope you can find someone good

Erika, you might find that Dr's are not very skilled up in the area's of food intolerance/allergy. What you need to do is to go & see a dietitian. I'll ask on my food intolerance email group as I think they will know a good one in Auckland.

I have a great dr but shes in devonport and not taking new patients. But perhaps what you need to do is just go in and ask for a referral to a nutritionist / dietician or pead / specialist if you are having trouble? GPs seem to just deal with the basics, and they may not have much pead experience.
Good luck finding a better doctor! Maybe ask around at your local playgroup / kindy / playcentre / daycare for recommendations.

Here you go: Failsafe is Free of AddItives, Low in Salicylates, Amines and Flavour Enhancers. website
So basically they're good dietitians who also know the workings of the Allergy unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Oz.
Anna Richards is the best failsafe dietician in Auckland. I was under her for some time and found her very helpful.

Thank you so much guys for your responses.
Susieq - we are in Ellerslie, so somewhere around Ellerslie towards Pakuranga way. I grew up in Howick and my mother lives there (i visit her all the time) so even out that way i would consider.
Nikki - you are right the GP's really do just deal with the basics! I guess i just don't know what type of specialist to get referred to regarding the baby not eating.
AandCsmum - thanks heaps! I didn't mention about intolerances but that is what we believe our 2 year old to have. We think it manifests as constipation - we have no rashes, laboured breathing etc that the allergy reaction does. We have been seeing a great natropath for the last 4 months and the #2 issues plus a few others have gotten massively better. We had a hair test done and it showed intolerance to dairy (quite high) and wheat (lower) but we have cut both out and in addition to herbs, probiotics, fish oils etc, have got her a lot better, but she still has the terrible issue with going #2 even though it is not rock hard anymore. She holds it in, refuses to squat- stands straight up with butt cheeks clenched and it's just soul destroying to see the process of her trying to pass a bowel motion. It can take up to a day. Her body says expell it, but her mind says no and she stops it and fights it and howls with pain too. So this is the ongoing issue with 2 year old.
9 month old i fear may have issues with diary too, although not diagnosed. We use the Novalac formula and stage 1 was fine. Switched to stage 2 at 6 months and bang - constipation, awful struggling. Rang the company after about 6 weeks and found out that the stage 2 had a higher casien content. Have gone back to Stage 1 and much better. Not amazing but much improved.
It's just the food issue with her. She does take food occasionally, but usually only the first 2 mouthfuls and then no more! Most of the time she gags on it as if it is just SO revolting and will most often vomit it back up anyway. She is a tiny wee thing, we are on about the 3rd percentile for age on the plunket scale. I am just worried she will fall off the graph and also missing nutrients and other things you get from eating food. (Jaw movement, tummy processing and breaking things down etc etc)
Thanks ladies. Any other comments would be well received. Will contact Anna Richards too.
Kind regards,
Erika

Re your baby and not eating - you definitely need to see a paed and I would strongly suggest an SLT (speech-language therapist) review re your 9 month old's eating. The paed would look at all the potential causes and the SLT would look at the specific feeding/swallowing behaviours. The referral to the SLT should probably be via the paed as they need to rule out medical causes first.
Finding a GP is so damned hard, I know. Is there any chance that you could go via Plunket - could your PN refer you to a paed, or could they suggest a good GP that might be helpful.

I was also going to suggest you should ask plunket for advise on a referral for your 9 month old. they suggested my dr refer DD to an eye specialist, which she did and Morgan had surgery pretty soon after.
A friends son had a similar issue with numeber 2s and she was seeing a pead about it from when it started via plunket I think .... I would ask for a referral from your doc now that shes older. And I will add, nothing they did completely helped and he was on medication off and on ... til he was toilet trained and then it stopped over night! No issues since!

Anna Jackson, who works out of Auckland Hospital. If you can get a referal from your GP it will be free.
She is not a dietitian, but there is a biomedical doctor in Auckland, Dr Leila Masson.
A couple of more suggestions for you too. I would definitely push to see a paed.

Erika - my friend goes to the Pakuranga Medical Centre by the Pakuranga Plaza (it's actually on William Roberts Rd). She travels a bit to see them and, unfortunately for her, has had to see them a bit for her and her son. From what she says they are very nice and thorough. I also know a nurse there and she is lovely. There are a few GP's there and I'm not sure exactly which one my friend goes to but could find out if you like. I went with her to her son's 6wk check up and the GP seemed really nice.

Just wanted to thank you all for your contributions.
Just wanted to update this in case anyone else reads this topic.
We made an appointment with Anna Richards the dietician for the youngest daughter regarding her not eating, gagging, vomiting etc.
She immediately thought that she had low iron and because of that, the appetite gets suppressed, and recommended we boost it up with chicken livers, Incremin syrup etc and fortified cereals (if we could get her to eat them!)
Well WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! Within 2 days our daughter was eating, opening her mouth, wanting food and stopped gagging and vomiting. We are now 2 weeks into it and she eats like a horse, is loving new foods, growing, filling out - it's awesome to see she is thriving once again. We also have gone off the Novalac formula and gone to a soy one which she seems much better on as well.
So once again THANKS to all for your help.
It's so wonderful to have this website and forums and access to a network of people to share thoughts, info and ideas with!
