QuoteReplyTopic: Suddenly refusing bottle - what do I do? Posted: 10 June 2011 at 7:21pm
From about 4 weeks, DD had issues feeding - she'd refuse to latch, cry and arch away. It made BF incredibly frustrating, and at 5.5 months I weaned her onto formula. She has been having top ups anyway from 6 weeks, and I haven't changed the bottle or the formula. She's always been finicky with the bottle as well, refusing to take it about half the time, but clearly hungry. She's just had a tummy bug but is over it, and tonight has started refusing the bottle again... she cries when offered and arches away, but is so grizzly and unsettled. I finally managed to get her to take it while watching TV - she started watching too and then demolished the whole 240mLs. Then kind of sighed happily and went straight to sleep in her cot. Why is she doing that?! And what can I do to change it? Feeding has never been a comfort thing for her, which has been pretty hard to accept, especially when BF, but even with the bottle she seems to regard it as a very stressful experience...
Aw SpecialK, your story sounds like my boy. We had a whole year of what you describe above. Unfortunately we never found a difinitive reason for it, and he started coming right after a year old. I know that's not so easy to hear, but sometimes some kids just don't seem to like feeding.
For my son, I really feel it was his sensory issues. We always had the most success when he had a sock he could rub all over his face while he drank. For some reason, I just don't think he liked the sensation of drinking/feeding and, like you say, considered it a stressful experience.
Just wanted to say good luck, and hope it improves. Also, a lot of people I have come across with similar issues (including cousins within our family) really took off on solids, so hopefully that helps you guys too.
