Topic: Thumb sucking - when does it start? Posted: 18 May 2011 at 12:36pm |
What age have little thumb suckers found their thumbs?
My ds is 4 weeks and loves sucking his thumb if I put it in his mouth, however isn't coordinated enough to get it there himself. When can I expect him to manage it?

I've got 2 thumb suckers, it's so cute! Hmmm I can't remember exactly when they were able to get their thumbs in their mouths, but it wasn't long. I'd say within a few weeks he should have it mastered

I have a thumb sucker, however, after weaning from the dummy at 5 months she found her thumb 3 months later.
So I'm no help

Cool, hopefully not too long then! He won't take a dummy but I'd prefer he had his thumb anyway, it's always there when he wants it!

DD was about 2/3 months old when she found hers. She alternated for a week or so to see which she liked then stuck with her right. Still does it now, but only to go to sleep or when having cuddles with her Rabbi

Really early. Maybe 6 or 8 weeks old? She swapped left and right for a while (I think she was just going for whatever was near her face) then settled on one side. Originally I didn't want her to (even although it looks so cute) so kept offering a dummy but she outright refused every type of dummy and persisted with her thumb. I think possibly some are just natural thumb suckers and others aren't.

DD started when she started teething, but she is more of a thumb chewer than thumb sucker. She seems to prefer sucking/chewing softer things when her teeth/gums are sore, fingers (hers and ours - ouch now she has some teeth!), cloth, soft toys, the trim from her foam rubber mat...
I wonder if she will stop when her teeth are better or if she is going to become a thumb sucker.
