Topic: Providing lunch Posted: 04 May 2011 at 4:15pm |
For those that provide lunch to their preschools, can you give me some ideas on what you take? They have no nuts or packaged food policy, which is great.
I dont want her to get bored with the same stuff, so want a list.
They allow you to take food to be heated which is great so i am looking at getting bowls with lids and she can take leftovers :)

Every day Daniel has:
- sandwichs, we ask what he wants on them and he gets that
- muffin, I make a batch every week so have heaps of different ones frozen and mine are healthy and fruity
- a piece of fruit or raisins or something along those lines
- yoghurt
He doesn't get bored with his lunch even though its the same stuff

DD usually has leftovers (not always from the night before - I have a collection of containers so that when I have leftovers I fill a whole lot of containers and freeze them so there are some for her everyday). She doesn't seem to mind having the same thing every day for a week or 2. Sometimes I'll freeze homemade pizza in toddler-sized slices.
I do lots of fruit, raw veges (carrot sticks, celery, green beans, capsicum, tomato; sometimes frozen peas/corn), sandwiches (usually jam or vegemite, but on all kinds of bread/buns), yoghurt, cheese, crackers, craisons/sultanas.
I have frozen muffins too, but at 16 months she doesn't get those every day.
Frozen pikelets/corn fritters are good too. I freeze them free flow (spread them on a tray, then when they are frozen, throw them in a container/bag. Then I can just grab one on days I'm a bit short on lunch.
DD is also at an age where she has days where she'll eat like a horse and others where she's not that hungry, so I have a wee container of frozen snacks in the freezer at creche for if she eats all of her lunch and is still hungry. Creche also has a loaf of bread and some jam for those instances too.
What does she have for lunch at home? That's a good starting point

Some weeks just for something a bit different i make up a packet of jelly & pour it into the wee gladware mini containers. Most days she has a marmite sandwich, some homebaking & an apple (preschool have an apple corer & cutting thing so she loves taking an apple) Shes a big fan of fruit/vege so also normally a wee glad container of diced orange/grapes or raw carrot or capsicum sticks. Other favourite treats in the lunch box are popcorn or
cheese straws (flaky pastry with grated cheese through it then rolled out cut in strips, twisted & baked)

Umm, fruit, a piece of baking, leftovers - usually pasta, popcorn, chips, rice crackers, sandwhich, yoghurt, jelly, custard, chicken nuggets, museli bar.
I hate providing luches but luckily daycare is relly flexible in what we can send along. There are no nut allergies so thats not an issue and no rule on packaged food which is a bonus cos sometimes I forget that I have to make his lunch....I have to make for one and the other one has lunch provided.

Daycare provides lunch, but Jake also goes to kindy so has to take a lunchbox for afternoon tea 2 days a week. They have a no nuts or eggs policy (packaged food fine but they have just joined a health programme so that may change).
Jake takes a sammie or cruskets or rice wafers / corn thins with jam or marmite. Then 2xfruit (grapes, mandarin, blueberries, strawberries, half an apple, half a pear, orange peeled and put in a plastic bag, or carrot sticks) and usually some crackers (rice crackers or shapes type thing) or maybe a plain biscuit. sometimes I put in some raisins / craisins / dried apricots or a cheese slice. sometimes he has a bar (mini fruit or cereal bar) or even a few chips in a plastic bag or a pack of cassava chips (hes not that keen on them though). today mum took him so I put a packet of rice wheels in as I packed it before going to work.

We use the nude lunchboxes so lots of compartments to fill.
Generally I do a mix of the following:
- Jam/honey sandwiches
- Corn thins with chicken
- fruit
- yoghurt
- raw veg
- frozen mixed veg
- Dried fruit (apricots, dates, raisins...)
- crackers
- popcorn
- cheese
- hard boiled egg

Always two sandwhiches with a variety of ham, luncheon, jam, honey, golden syrup or vegemite.
Then either fresh fruit, dried fruit, mini muffin or whatever baking I've done, slice of processed cheese or yogurt to go with it.
If I'm putting in something like a hot cross bun or huge scone or muffin I will do one sandwhich, baked good and a piece of fruit.
