Topic: Moving around the cot... Posted: 01 April 2011 at 10:30pm |
Just after some advice...please!!
We had a really good, self-settling baby for day sleeps until about a month ago when he started rolling and preparing to crawl. Now no matter how exhausted he is when he goes to bed he won't go to sleep. Instead he rolls around the cot ending up with his head smooshed up against the bars and/or arms/legs through the bars which causes him to cry. He can't roll from his stomach to his back and sometimes he will fall asleep in that position.
What I wondered was if this is just a phase that he will eventually grow out of? Is there anything that people have done that worked that didn't involve using a movement restricting device such as a safe-t-sleep or safety pinning his sleeping bag to the bottom sheet?
I have considered getting an Airwrap...has this worked well for anyone?
Will being able to roll from his stomach to his back improve things??
So many questions!! Any feedback appreciated!

I found that Kiara went through phases of this when she started rolling/commando crawling/proper crawling/pulling up. In her case it only lasted roughly a week each time, and we just had a couple of extra wake ups each night.
We tummy slept Kiara from early on (she didn't sleep well any other way) so I'm not too concerned on that (but accept you probably are!) And yes I do think being able to roll back will help solve the problem.
On the leaving him on tummy to sleep IF he will sleep that way, (and if you're comfortable with it) just make sure its a tight fitting sheet and no blankets/pillowcases/what have yous, near his face (sounds like you have a sleeping bag anyways) and because he is 6 mths and I presume can push up, he will be able to move his face out of any sort of obstruction.

Kiara is 3 and Teagan is 2, now we're expecting our long awaited 3rd!

I found the airwrap stopped my boy from sticking his legs through the cot and I also found a sleeping bag stopped him from being able to crawl around much, and rolling over. My first slept on his tummy as soon as he could roll over, if they have good head control I find they are usually ok.

mt girl used to do this all the time, i resorted to making her lie down by having her in her sleeping bag and gently wrapping her legs. Once she couldnt roll over she would quickly go to sleep. A safe-T-sleep might be an option as well?

Thanks for the feedback ladies!
He's in a sleeping bag but is mighty mobile in it...surprises me actually!
I'm quite happy for him to be a tummy sleeper, he seems to prefer that or lying on his side, which is one of the reasons why I'm trying to avoid using a safe-t-sleep or something similar that prevents him from being able to get into a position he likes.
Might have to invest in the Airwrap, then knowing that he can't hurt himself I can leave him to settle himself into whatever position he ends up in??
It's really starting to do my head in! Getting him to sleep is becoming such a battle and I really don't want to start picking him up, rocking him or feeding him to sleep in fear that it will just make things worse in the long run.

When we had this phase with my boys we used the safety sleep - just until they had mastered the rolling a bit better and then the phase seemed to pass on it's own. Maybe they had it for a month. I got sick of rolling them back and having my sleep disturbed!

I used a safety sleep with both of mine as soon as they went into the cot til after they could walk. They never even stood up in the cot til they went into a bed at 19mths!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm starting to think more about using a Safe T Sleep. I thought they totally restrained the child, but after some research last night I can see that they can sleep on their side, just not their tummy. I actually think that DS ends up on his tummy a bit by accident - over rotates when going to his side.

DD does this only during her day sleeps and yup its become a mission to get her to sleep in the afternoon, as I'm often having to rescue her when she has hit her head against the cot or gotten stuck.
I've pretty much left her to go to sleep on her tummy, during the day she's only in her clothes, then when she's fully asleep I turn her back onto her back.
She doesn't do this at night.

Unfortunately, unless DS is totally exhausted he won't fall asleep...on his tummy or otherwise, just ends up in an awkward position and gets more and more upset about it and bangs his head. I've tried going back in, putting him back in the middle of the cot either leaving him on his tummy or putting him back on his back but he's usually too worked up by then and continues to move around.
Hopefully I can get a Safe T Sleep on trade me and will give it a go!
Nice to hear this isn't just me though!

We're not having much luck today either, daylight savings ending isn't helping either as our whole sleep/feed routine is out by 1 hour. Be glad when this week is over.

Got to the end of my tether yesterday...sick of DS not going to sleep because he's moving all over the cot. I folded a sheet lengthwise so it's about 30cm wide, wrapped it around the mattress and across his trunk. Bit of a make-shift safe-t-sleep. Now I put him into bed, tuck him in and....he falls asleep!! He can still move his legs and roll onto his side if he wants to but no crying, whinging or moaning...just nods off!! He was getting himself so over-tired and worked up moving around the cot and banging his head...now he's a happy sleeping baby again!!
Thanks for everyone's input!

Good work, may have to give that a go with DD as she's still moving, accept at night when I put her into her sleepsack she doesn't.
I haven't used it during the day as its usually to hot and she sleeps in her clothes.
She did sleep for 14 hours last night - guess not sleeping during the day will do that.

Just wanted to say that I use a safe t sleep and my boy rolled over in it the other morning lol I must not have had it snug enough. He was wearing a wrap me up swaddle as well! He's just learnt to roll back to front and every time you put him on his back he rolls lol. So I dont even think safe t sleep is always the answer lol. Glad you found something that worked :)

Oooh when this happened with me, I was on holiday in the UK at my dads house and e could NOT settle on his tummy, a bit like you I got a sheet folded it to slot through the back of the sleeping bag, ie under his back running through the arms of the sleeping bag, then wrapped sheet round mattress, it just stopped him rolling over, cannot remember when we stopped needing to do this but it worked brilliantly and I guess we must have stopped needing to do it when he was more capable of moving about or something I really don't remember.
I felt safe as it was running under him he couldn't get caught up in it or anything.

We use a Safe T Sleep, and DS is a total side sleeper! We use it so he can't roll over, because he can't settle on his tummy, and when he rolls he thinks it's playtime!! But he can roll in the Safe T Sleep, after most sleeps when I go in he is on his tummy anyway, so not sure why we're using it now, lol!
